Microsoft’s first-generation Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets were easily the most sleek and unique next-generation Windows devices that debuted between late 2012 and early 2013. They also didn’t come anywhere close to meeting Microsoft’s sales expectations and the company had to take a $900 million write-down last quarter related to unsold inventory. If half a dozen independent reports and Microsoft’s invitations to the press are any indication, we’re about to see the sequels to these two ill-fated slates unveiled. And according to a few reports from reliable sites, the new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 will be incremental updates priced in line with the original models at launch. Has Microsoft learned from its mistakes? Will the company have a few surprises in store to help reverse the next-generation Surface tablets’ fortunes? A report from early Monday morning suggests Microsoft might finally unveil its iPad mini competitor during the press conference, so tune into our live coverage to find out.
