What Local Abortion Laws Look Like Now

On the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade here's a chart from Bloomberg Businessweek that looks at laws restricting access to abortion that were passed by each of 30 state legislatures during 2011 and 2012. As Jennifer Daniel and Allison McCann note in their intro: "In the past two years, 30 states have passed 135 new laws restricting access to abortion." On the wheel, which divides states by region, the laws passed in each state are represented by symbols. A star, for instance, represents a law having to do with "clinic regulation" while a circle represents a law having to do with "timing & type." Note that Kansas, the center of the anti-Roe demonstrations today, has each symbol represented, and all but the symbol for "counseling & waiting" appear multiple times. You can also scroll over the symbols to learn more about the laws
