    After nearly a half hour of discussion, the Washington City Council declared the three-story warehouse located at 604 North Seventh Avenue a dangerous building at its regular meeting Wednesday night.   • Untreated wastewater flows into creek

    Washington city officials reported untreated wastewater was flowing out of two manholes southwest of the town Wednesday afternoon.   • Johnson elected first woman mayor

    Sandra Johnson became Washington’s first elected female mayor Tuesday after winning 76 percent of the vote. Johnson captured 581 of the 765 votes cast for mayor, while write-in challenger Norm Bruty received 184 votes, or 24 percent of the total. Full Story »

  • Hotel/motel tax checks out

    The residents of Washington gave a resounding “no” to the proposed hotel/motel tax at Tuesday’s city elections, defeating the measure by a 2-to-1 margin. Of the 837 residents who voted on the referendum, 559 voted against (67 percent) while 278 voted in favor. Full Story »

    Workers, from left, Mark Gloyer, Ron Boyd and Jim Bennett move the new sign welcoming people to downtown Washington into place on its stone stand in the middle of East Washington Street. The Downtown Enhancement Committee designed the sign and raised the $10,000 needed to construct it from local citizens, businesses and groups.
