  • Gloversville budget hearing set for Tuesday

    GLOVERSVILLE - City residents will have an opportunity to comment on the city's proposed 2010 budget at a Common Council work session Tuesday. A public hearing on the budget, which is incomplete and contains an approximately $1.4 million gap between revenues and expenditures, will be held at City Hall.   • Planning Board approves statement

    GLOVERSVILLE - On Tuesday, city Planning Board members approved the findings statement for the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter. The findings statement is essentially a summary of the conclusions of the FEIS, which is a six-inch-thick binder of information, graphs, maps and other materials. Full Story »

  • Document offers possible guidelines for regulating wood boilers in Perth

    PERTH - Town Attorney Carmel Greco has provided the town with a draft of a document that would regulate wood boiler use in the municipality.   • Saluting the Veterans

    GLOVERSVILLE - A Veterans Day parade made its way down Main Street on Saturday, complete with marching bands, former U.S. military soldiers and children saluting their elders. People lining the streets clapped as members of Gloversville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2077 fired three volleys along the parade route. Some were dressed in red, white and blue garb.   • Local business leaders to meet with governor

    JOHNSTOWN - Fulton County election officials said Friday they have begun counting ballots in five Fulton County towns where voting machines faltered Tuesday.   • City adds $3,000 to projected revenues

    GLOVERSVILLE - City officials added about $3,000 to projected revenues for the 2010 budget at a budget session Thursday. Finance Commissioner Bruce Van Genderen met with Common Council members to review all the projected revenues for the city's 2010 budget. Revenues are expected to amount to about $13.7 million, about $1.4 million less than projected expense. Full Story »

  • Johnstown expected to meet mark in sales tax

    JOHNSTOWN - City Treasurer Michael Gifford on Monday predicted the city will meet its $3.1 million budgeted in sales tax for this year - a small positive in what could be a dismal fiscal situation for the city heading into 2010.   • House's condition angers neighbors

    JOHNSTOWN - The owner of a blighted home at 27 S. Chase St. has until Tuesday to clean up the residence or face legal action, city Fire Chief Bruce Heberer said Thursday. Heberer, the city's code enforcement officer, said the city has been working since August to clean up the situation. Neighbors have been complaining about the house.   • New machine to tally votes

    JOHNSTOWN - Fulton County Board of Elections officials said this morning election results in Bleecker, Broadalbin, Northampton and Perth will not be available until next week. On Tuesday, ballot-scanning machines in those four towns and in Oppenheim malfunctioned. A court order prevented officials from accessing the machines immediately, but it was lifted Wednesday.   • Finalists chosen for bus garage design job

  • Judge sentences two to Drug Court

    JOHNSTOWN - Two Fulton County Court defendants will be participating in Drug Court after sentencing in separate cases Thursday before Judge Richard C. Giardino. Justin T. Gray, 28, of Keyser Lake Road, Dolgeville, was sentenced by Giardino to a three-year conditional discharge to participate in Drug Court. He also was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine. Full Story »

  • Armed man robs Johnstown store

    JOHNSTOWN - A masked robber made off with about $1,000 in cash after displaying a gun Thursday night at a convenience store on North Perry Street. City police said at about 6 p.m., a white man wearing blue jeans, a brown sweatshirt and a green vest displayed what looked like a semi-automatic pistol and demanded the cashier hand over money.   • County turnout: 25%

    JOHNSTOWN - Tuesday's local general elections resulted in a smaller turnout in Fulton County compared to the last local election year in 2007, but a larger turnout in Gloversville, where there was a mayor's race. There were 31,175 voters registered countywide Tuesday, and unofficial results from the county Board of Elections showed that 7,703 voted, for a 25 percent voter turnout. Full Story »

  • Teen says deer caused fatal crash

    JOHNSTOWN - An 18-year-old local youth was killed late Wednesday night when the car he was riding in crashed into a tree. The driver of the car, who survived, said he was trying to avoid a deer. Fulton County sheriff's deputies said Joseph W. Page III, of 210 Willie Road, was killed in the crash, which occurred at 10:16 p.m. Full Story »

  • Officers to handle truancy at GHS

    GLOVERSVILLE - Soon, Gloversville Enlarged School District students will have more than a phone call and a school official to deal with if they are labeled serial skippers.   • Slingerland easily wins re-election

    JOHNSTOWN - Incumbent Republican Mayor Sarah J. Slingerland rolled to a landslide victory over her independent opponent Tuesday, becoming the first two-term Johnstown mayor elected in two decades. According to unofficial Fulton County Board of Elections results, Slingerland beat political newcomer Stuart D. Myzal by a vote of 1,359 to 288 in the city. Full Story »
