On Saturday afternoon, at least, they succeeded.     A convicted felon who had been deported, then re-entered the country illegally, was arrested by Gloucester and Peabody police as part of a month-long drug sweep in Essex County. The drug sweep, carried out by a cadre of law enforcement agencies, resulted in the arrests of 156 defendants, and the seizure of more than 118 pounds or 54 kilos of cocaine, 138 grams of heroin and six firearms.     SALEM and mdash; The huge Halloween crowds last weekend included a record 9,000 train passengers who purchased commuter rail tickets to Salem. The MBTA sold 6,026 Haunted Happenings tickets and mdash; more than double last year's number and mdash; at the ticket windows and at a table set up at North Station in Boston, according to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo.     Arrests A Gloucester man and a Rockport man were arrested yesterday afternoon on drug charges. Thomas A. Burgess, 49, no known address, Gloucester, and Adeland E. Danjou, 47, of 510 Sandy Bay Estates, Rockport, are each facing charges of illegal possession of a class A substance after they were arrested at Pratty's on Parker Street at 1:30 p.m. yesterday.     ESSEX and mdash; While cleaning the attic on Saturday, a Southern Avenue resident found what police said was an old military explosive and called police to find out what to do with it.   • Roofer falls 35 feet at Pond View

    A worker fell from the roof of the Pond View Village housing complex in West Gloucester yesterday morning, suffering multiple injuries and requiring emergency airlift to Boston.
