    LEWISTOWN - After 23 years serving as the mayor of Juniata Terrace Borough, Marvin Lantz is finally calling it quits, but not without a bit of disappointment. Lantz said an oversight on his part is what lead to his retirement, since he forgot to fill out paperwork to appear on the ballot during the election this year.   • Convicted rapist gets 5 to 10 years

    STATE COLLEGE - A winter storm watch is in effect for much of the Juniata Valley from this evening into Wednesday morning, according to a report from the National Weather Service in State College. The National Weather Service issued the watch report Monday, which states there could be "significant snow and ice accumulation" across Mifflin, Juniata and Huntingdon counties beginning this evening.   • Rape and assault charges withdrawn

    LEWISTOWN - Charges filed against a local couple reportedly involved in the rape and assault of an out-of-state woman were withdrawn Monday morning, after the alleged victim informed the Mifflin County District Attorney's office that she would not be returning to the area to testify at two separate preliminary hearings.   • Accident victim's identity released by police

    MILLERSTOWN - The identity of a Millerstown woman killed in a one-vehicle accident on Dec. 4 in Perry County was released Monday by Pennsylvania State Police Newport. Police said Tina M. Adams, 44, of Millerstown, was traveling west along state Route 0017 at an apparent high rate of speed when she drove into the eastbound lane and onto its shoulder. Full Story »

  • Official: Full rail service has been restored

    McVEYTOWN - Full rail service has been restored after a train derailment closed a busy stretch of track in the southern portion of Mifflin County. Mifflin County Emergency Services Director Phil Lucas reported Friday night that state Route 103 between Mattawana and Newton Hamilton had been reopened to normal traffic following the two-day cleanup effort.   • Accident severs natural gas line in Mount Union

    MOUNT UNION - A traffic accident Thursday night in Mount Union severed a gas line, forcing a two-block evacuation. Huntingdon County Emergency Services Director Adam Miller said nobody was injured, however, about 50 homes were affected by the outage. Miller said the emergency personnel went door-to-door to notify residents and the Red Cross set up a shelter for those affected. Full Story »

  • Rail service restored

    McVEYTOWN - Full rail service has been restored after a train derailment closed a busy stretch of track in the southern portion of Mifflin County. No one was hurt after 28 cars of a 121-car Norfolk Southern freight train headed from Conway to Allentown left the eastbound track late Wednesday night just west of McVeytown in Mifflin County. Rail officials say one track opened at 2:30 a.m. Full Story »
