  • Skull and bones found in desert

    A skull and jawbone are among human skeletal remains found yesterday in the desert near Blythe, according to Riverside County sheriff's officials. Detectives arrived at the scene about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday along Graham Pass Road about five miles south of Chuckwalla Road. Full Story »

  • Fatal roll-over crash prompts SigAlert

    One person was killed early this morning in a roll-over accident that continues to create a SigAlert along Highway 74 in Romoland, according to the California Highway Patrol. The passenger was ejected during the 1 a.m. wreck that resulted in the closing of Highway 74 between Antelope and Menifee Roads, CHP Officer Jaci Parent said from the Traffic Management Center in San Bernardino.   • Gas main blows like a whistle, 19 evacuated

    A whistling sound prompted erroneous fears of a natural gas leak and forced the evacuation of 19 Beaumont residents last night near a gas company facility, according to Riverside County Fire Department officials.   • Barbara Lohman named permanent executive Philharmonic director

Lohman, a former philharmonic board member, has been in the post on a temporary basis since February.     Carol Leighty, superintendent of the Temecula Valley Unified School District since 2006, will retire at the end of the school year.     A long-planned, county-funded Big League Dreams Sports Park moved one step closer to becoming a reality Tuesday.     Wildomar brought in more money than it spent in its first year as an incorporated city, besting its inaugural budget projections. For city officials, the good news comes with a downside: the budget surplus is more than $1 million less than experts predicted before the cityhood election.   • Menifee Union school board postpones elections

    The Menifee Union School District board voted Tuesday to postpone its next election, saving money in next year's budget and extending the tenure of two board members. Also Tuesday, the board rejected a proposal to form a charter school in Menifee. The district's elections will now be held in odd-numbered years.   • Riverside County takes steps to help residents become greener

    Riverside County is taking steps to make it easier for homeowners and businesses to become more energy efficient.     Eion Calderwood tried out for a role in "The Wizard of Oz" last year at his mom's urging. To his surprise, he was cast as the Tin Man. "Since then I've loved acting," the 13-year-old said.
