4:48 p.m.: That flurry of afternoon Gold Medals has pushed the United States past China and into first on the medal table.

4:40 p.m: It's over. Ashton Eaton wins Gold in the Decathlon and the unofficial titles of the "World's Greatest Athlete." He missed out on breaking his own World Record, but we think he'll take it. Trey Hardee gets the Silver. Leonel Suarez of Cuba wins the Bronze.

4:34 p.m.: Now the soccer team has their Gold. They beat Japan 2-1, avenging their loss in last year's World Cup final.

4:28 p.m.: RESULT: It's a Gold Medal for the U.S. women's national team! Not soccer! (Not yet, anyway) but Water Polo. They beat Spain 8-5 in the Final Match.

4:16 p.m.: Just one event remains in the Decathlon, the 1,500m race, which will begin shortly at Olympic Stadium. Ashton Eaton lead Trey Hardee by 151 points, an nearly insurrmountable lead given that Eaton's best time in the 1,500m is nearly 30 seconds better than Hardee's. A solid run by both will give the American rivals Silver and Gold, although Cuban Leonel Suarez and Damian Warner of Canada are waiting in th ewings should disaster strike.

4:06 p.m.: RESULT: Usain Bolt wins the 200m, becoming the first person to win both the 100m and 200m races in back-to-back Olympics. Jamaica win all three medals as Yohan Blake takes Silver and Warren Weir gets the Bronze.

3:55: p.m.: RESULT: Just before the 200m began, American Christian Taylor locked up the Gold in Men's Triple Jump. Teammate Will Claye captured Silver and Fabrizio Donato won Bronze.

3:22 p.m.: RESULT: And while all that was happening, Australia and Hungary finished off a thrilling Bronze Medal match in Women's Water Polo, with the Aussies winning 13-11. Australia actually had it wrapped up in regulation when a Hungarian player launched an underwater sneak attack, stole the ball, and scored with no time left on the clock. Luckily, for that goalie, her team took over in the extra periods and won the match.

3:15 p.m.: RESULT: Natalia Vorobieva of Russia wins Gold in Women's 72kg Freestyle Wrestling, pinning Stanka Zlateva Hristova of Bulgaria for the win.

3:10 p.m.: RESULT: China gets back on the board thanks to Diving, of coruse. Chen Ruolin wins Gold in Women's 10m Platform. Brittany Broben of Australia wins Silver and  Pandelela Rinong Pamg of gets Bronze.

3:08 p.m.: RESULT: David Rudisha of Kenya just broke the World Record in the 800m Final, becoming the first man to run under 1 minute and 41 seconds. It was the fastest 800m race in history, as the eighth place finishing time would have been good enough to win the last three Olympic Games. Nijel Amos of Botswana won Silver and Timothy Kitum, also from Kenya, won Bronze. There were two other national records (not counting Rudisha's) and seven personal bests in that final race.

2:33 p.m.: Got some free time? Here's a nice collection of Olympic photos from every day of the Games, courtesy of The New York Times.

2:15 p.m. RESULTS: Saori Yoshida of Japan has defeated Tonya Lynn Verbeek of Canada to win the Women's 55kg Freestyle Wrestling Gold. Yuliya Ratkevich of Azerbaijan and Jackeline Renteria Castillo of Colombia both won Bronze medal matches.

1:40 p.m.: RESULTS: The USA beats Australia in Women's Basketball and Norway beat Korea in Women's Handball. Both will advance to their sports Gold Medal game.

1:24 p.m.: Now the Sheilds has won, every media outlet has dug the features they've done on her in the past year or so. Here's Sports Illustrated, The New Yorker, The New York Times, and our own The Atlantic.

12:40 p.m.: RESULT: American Claressa Shields win the third and final Women's Gold Medal by beating Nadezda Torlopova of Russia in the Middleweight final. She's is the only American boxer to win a medal in 2012.

12:04 p.m.: RESULT: The crowd goes even crazier for Irish fighter Katie Taylor as she beats Russia's Sofya Ochigava in the Women's Lightweight final.

11:45 a.m.: RESULT: The crowd at the Olympic boxing arena goes wild as Nicola Adams of Great Britain wins the first ever Olympic Gold medal in Women's Boxing. (In the flyweight division.) Ren Cancan of China gets Silver.

11:18 a.m.: After eight events in the Decathlon, Ashton Eaton and Trey Hardee are still 1-2 in standings, but Eaton extends his lead, after Hardee struggled in the Pole Vault. (He missed three times at 5 meter, while Eaton made it up to 5.2, finishing third in that event. There are two more events tonight, javelin and the 1,500m race.

11:05 a.m.: Charlottle Dujardin finishes up the Equestrian events, by going last and winning Gold in Individual Dressage, adding to her Team Gold from earlier in the week. Adelinde Cornelissen of the Netherlands wins Silver and another Brit, Laura Bechtolsheimer, wins Brozne. It was a pheonomenal year for Great Britain's riders as they win 3 Golds and 5 total equestrian medals, better than any other nation.

10:10 a.m.: After losing a heartbreaking semifinal to the United States, Canada's women's soccer team gets some measure of solace by beat France in much the same fashion. Diana Matheson broke a 0-0 tie with a putback in the 92nd minute, avoiding overtime and claiming the Bronze medal.

9:43 a.m.: The South African 4x400m relay team has been reinstated into the Olympic final after appealing the semifinal race they were knocked out of and didn't finish. Double-amputee Oscar Pistorius was set to run the third leg of the race, when the man on the second-leg, Ofentse Mogawane, was tripped up by his Kenyan opponent, fell to the track, and didn't get up again after injuring his shoulder. Officials ruled that Mogawane was impeded and so his team will be given the final spot in medal race, which will be run tomorrow.

9:17 a.m.: Here's a recap of the Weightlifting program that ended yesterday. The lifters broke 44 World and Olympic records over the course of 11 days.

9:05 a.m.: RESULT: A two-hour, 10,000-meter, open water swim comes down to just the tiniest of margins. Despite a furious sprint in the final moments, Haley Anderson of the United States misses Gold by 0.4 seconds to Eva Risztov of Hungary who led almost wire-to-wire in the Women's Swim Marathon. Martina Grimaldi of Italy wins Bronze.

8:50 a.m.: If you were wondering how swimming marathoners eat or drink during a 2-hour swim... they don't really. But each swimmer's support team can offer fuel at designated points on the course and they use these little flags both to hand out refreshment and help the swimmer identify which water bottle is theirs. Cute.

8:21 a.m.: What's wrong with U.S. sailing? The United States has more sailing medals than any other country in Olympic history, but is doing some soul searching after putting up a big fat goose egg in 2012.

8:12 a.m.: It seems that the Sailing races, including the Men's 470 medal race, have been postponed due to lack of strong wind. They'll try again tomorrow.

7:04 a.m.: In the seventh event of the Decathlon, the Discus, Trey Hardee comes in third with an impressive 48m throw, blowing away Ashton Eaton's 42.5. Hardee is still in second, but has sliced the lead in half, making up more than 100 points. (The gap between them is now 99 points.) The next event is Pole Vault.

6:22 a.m.: MEDAL COUNT UPDATE: After a big day on the track Wednesday, the United States has closed the gap with China and now trails by just two Gold Medals. Their edge in the Brozne medals gives the U.S. a 81-77 lead in the overall total and Americans are already entered in three Gold Medal Matches for later today. Great Britain came up empty yesterday, but remains solidly in third.

6:12 a.m.: MEDALS TO BE AWARDED TODAY: In addition to the four Canoe medals already given out today (see below); there are 19 other Gold Medal events. Here is the order of all the Finals and Gold Medal Matches, with all times approximate and subject to change:
