Longtime Android fanboy will ‘hate’ himself for it, but he’s switching to iPhone
The incredibly long time it takes for many Android phones to receive software updates is something that has driven users crazy for years now. Longtime Android fanboy Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai recently reached a breaking point with Android after news broke this week about a massive flaw in the platform that lets hackers compromise Android devices simply by sending them either an MMS message or a multimedia file. In particular, Franceschi-Bicchierai was enraged that it would take so long for his phone to get a necessary patch, if it ever got it at all.

What makes this particularly infuriating is that Google was alerted to this problem earlier in the spring and developed a patch for it. However, for many Android users that critical patch is still awaiting approval from both OEMs and carriers.
“Let me stress this out once more: the patches are ready to go,” Franceschi-Bicchierai fumes. “They were approved by Google months ago. But you won’t get them for another few weeks (if you’re lucky) or months (most likely) or never (a very solid possibility) depending how old your phone is — if it’s too old manufacturers just stop supporting them—and how lackadaisical your manufacturer and carrier are with regards to updates.”
What makes this particularly bad for him is that he really doesn’t like Apple products very much and he has a special loathing for blind Apple fanboys in particular.
“I never liked Apple’s walled garden and ‘we-control-everything’ approach, and I particularly disliked Apple fanboys’ dumb ‘oh my god there’s a new iThing coming out’ reverence and hysteria,” he explains.
At the end of the day, he’s decided to just make the switch to the iPhone anyway even though “my old self will hate me” for it.
