    A look at Irene's wake _ and what's ahead

The latest on what's happening with Hurricane Irene — in its wake and in its path as it moves north along the Eastern Seaboard:

    RIGHT NOW:

    — THE STORM — Irene continues to weaken as it passes over New England.

    — NYC EVACUATIONS — The mayor says NYC residents who evacuated as Irene approached can return home at 3 p.m.

    AHEAD OF THE STORM:

    — CANADA — The storm is expected to move over eastern Canada by Sunday night.

    BEHIND THE STORM:

    — NEW YORK — Firefighters rescued dozens of people from flooded homes on Staten Island, residents removed garbage and debris from clogged sewer gates and once-quiet roads became busier soon after Irene crossed New York as a powerful tropical storm.

    — NATIONAL GUARD — At least 7,500 National Guard troops have deployed to provide help to states affected by the storm.

    — DEATHS —Hurricane Irene had led to the deaths of 15 people in seven states as of Sunday afternoon.

    — WASHINGTON, D.C. — Irene forced postponement of Sunday's dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. At least 36,000 homes and businesses without power.

    — POWER OUTAGES — More than four million homes and businesses have lost power. Utility workers fan out along to restore power to those left in dark.

    — SHELTERS — The American Red Cross had well over 150 shelters open from North Carolina to Connecticut.

    — OUTER BANKS — Irene made its official landfall just after first light near Cape Lookout, N.C., at the southern end of the Outer Banks, the ribbon of land that bows out into the Atlantic Ocean. Shorefront hotels and houses were lashed with waves. Two piers were destroyed, and at least one hospital was forced to run on generator power.

    — BAHAMAS — Small islands face big clean up after taking the brunt of Hurricane Irene's destructive passage over Bahamas, experiencing whipped by winds that exceeded 120 mph.

May God be with all of us, for we are living in the end of days. We need him more now then ever. We are wrapped up in the little things in life, that we are missing the big picture. We walk around with blinders on. We are never happy with what we have. We foget about family, and being human. When will learn that if it can happen to someone else, it can happen to you!

Do people think its time power companies started to bury the plowerlines and make a conserted effort to prevent massive power outages. Sure everyone wants power to be restored as quickly as possible. Would it be nice to know that it stays that way. With millions without power today and the storms that knock it out constantly. Isnt it time to change?
      • Don 9 mths ago
Compleatly incorrect burying the powerlines is not making the power grid more reliable. Buried powerlines are more diffcult to replace, imposible to work on with flooding, and not always more reliable. If a city or town has buried powerlines they can be without power for weeks until the water is cleared out.

As you can see water disappates quickly and under ground power lines are routed past high flooding areas. Flooding is intensified by drainage systems not designed to handle mass amounts of rain and power outages are commom even with thunder storms. Results can be seen in nieghborhoods in Oklahoma communites and is effective even in ice storms.Underground power lines stay intact and are much easier to trouble shoot.

I was afraid that the hurricane was going to swamp my car, so I just drove it into the ocean so I wouldn't have to worry about it.

Obama would be more effective declaring an emergency where ever he's headed next.
      • A Yahoo! User 9 mths ago
you just can not stay on the subject, can you? bringing up Obama ineach subject is getting really lame. he is at least doing more than Bush did with Katrina.
      • richard 9 mths ago
yup he played 10 rounds of golf more too
      • Rick 9 mths ago
I did stay on subject. Not only did he waste more money, he desensitized the people to the next crisis, which may be what, a week - two weeks away? If the next one is a serious storm, and people aren't leaving because they've already been through 1 "declared emergency", Obama mat very well end up with American blood on his hands. This was a fundamental mistake, and another example of why Obama should not be in office.
