Over a year ago Marc Jacobs teased us with the news that he would be launching his own range of cosmetics, and today we have a first look at the playful, colourful collection thanks to an extensive interview in WWD. The beauty collection is classic Marc, fusing bold colours and his cheeky sense of humour with elegance. We have rounded up the 10 things you need to know about the collection, from the foundation to lipstick names....
There are four elements to the line
This is a meaty collection with 122 pieces, which are divided into four seperate categories: Smart Complexion, Blacquer, Hi-Per Color and Boy Tested, Girl Approved. Smart Complexion includes foundations, concealer and powder, Blacquer contains a precision pen eyeliner, lash lifter and gel crayon, Hi-Per Color contains lip products, blush, eye shadow, bronzer and nail lacquer, and Boy Tested, Girl Approved includes a lip balm, brow tamer and concealer.
The collection will launch on August 9th at Sephora
Get your diaries and a red pen out, as the collection will hit Sephora, sephora.com and select Marc Jacobs stores in the US on August 9th. This is the first time that Sephora has launched a brand in their stores. It will then come to Sephors in France, Italy and Spain in spring 2014 and throughout Europe through 2014.
Introducing the MJ beauty staples...
When it comes to coverage, MJ's Genius Gel Super-Charged Foundation comes in 16 shades and uses buoyancy gel and anti-ageing technology - it is can be used to achieve the natural look upto full coverage. Whereas the Remedy Concealer Pen is a brightener and concealer, coming in seven shades, also using anti-ageing remedy. The Magic Marc’er Precision Pen Eyeliner (love the name) is a waterproof dark black liner which was inspired by a lacquer table in Jacobs’ living room.
Marc chose his colours like he chooses fabric
MJ said that his colour palette 'tells a story and that story is based on a spirit. I chose different types of characters, such as an ingénue.' He approached the line in the same way as putting a fashion collection together with his design team as he said: 'Formulas are like fabrics, fibers, each fiber, whether silk or cashmere or whatever, they have natural properties.'
The names of the products are playful
MJ had fun with the names of his products, as the Lovemarc gel lipstick comes in 16 shades named after his favourite films, the eye shadow palette is called 'Style Eye-Con' (good one Marc) and a blusher named after his tattoo is called Shameless. Marc said of the latter: 'And to me ‘shameless’ is just an aspiration. Whether it’s wearing a lace dress with a pair of boxer shorts or whether it’s taking off my clothes for a magazine or whether it’s admitting to my flaws or having a hair transplant, I’m not ashamed of what I do. I haven’t done anything wrong. And I’d prefer to be honest because I sleep better at night.'
Sofia Coppola wore Marc Jacobs Beauty to the Met Ball
Marc revealed to WWD that he tested the collection on Sofia Coppola who wore the collection to the Met Ball. He revealed: 'I escorted Sofia Coppola to the Met Ball and Diane Kendal [who consulted on the line] did her makeup using all Marc Jacobs Beauty.' Plus he's been using his products on himself, adding 'And I’ve been using the Brow Tamer.'
Some of the products are unisex
Three of the products in the line are unisex, as the Lip Lock Moisture Balm, Brow Tamer Grooming Gel, and Remedy Concealer Pen are all for the fellas too.
Marc Jacobs likes the performance quality of makeup, which goes perfectly with his collections
MJ said to WWD about the cosmetics: 'I like the idea of transforming oneself, making and modeling yourself to what you feel like being, whether that’s once a day, three times a day, seven times a week, whatever it is. I like the transformative qualities of fashion and fashion to me is not just clothing, it’s hangbags, it’s shoes, it’s clothes, it’s hair, it’s makeup, it’s fragrance, it’s the whole ritual of making those choices, of enjoying the ritual, of making the choices that will tell the world who you want to be that day.' He summarised: 'I think everybody is the star in their own movie. And so you dress the part, depending on how you feel or what the part is that day. I mean my shrink probably knows who I really am, but most people know me as how I present myself.'
How he feels about the caked on foundation look
Marc used light, blendable shades as he said that 'I don’t like natural, that’s a little lazy. But I think there is just a kind of honesty and an ease and an irreverence with this.'
Marc isn't going to add skin care to his expanding beauty portfolio
'I think skin care is superimportant, but it feels more of a scientific process so I don’t know that I could get the same pleasure or have the same passion as something that was aesthetic. I might have a great time doing the packaging for a skin-care line, but I don’t think I could really sit through four-hour meetings about formula,' revealed Marc.
