A look at Netflix since much-hated price hike

Some key events involving Netflix since a backlash against it began over the summer:

July 12, 2011: Netflix Inc. says it will raise prices by as much as 60 percent for millions of subscribers who want to rent DVDs by mail and watch video on the Internet. The company decided to separate the two options so that subscribers who want both must buy separate plans totaling at least $16 per month. Netflix Inc. had been bundling both options in a single package starting at $10 per month.

Sept. 1: The price hike begins to take effect for existing customers. New customers had the new prices immediately.

Sept. 5: Netflix begins to offer its service in Latin America. Like its counterpart in Canada, the Latin American service is streaming-only, with no options for getting DVDs by mail.

Sept. 18: Netflix CEO Reed Hastings apologizes but keeps price hike in effect. Company creates more anger when it announces plans to split into two services — Netflix for the streaming, and Qwikster for the familiar discs in red envelopes. That means subscribers have to visit two websites to make movie requests and update billing information. Hastings says the two businesses have different cost structures and benefits, and splitting would let each grow independently.

Oct. 10: Netflix backs away from its plan to split its two services.

Oct. 24: The company discloses that it lost 800,000 U.S. subscribers in the July-September quarter, ending with 23.8 million. That loss is more than the 600,000 that Netflix had predicted.

Nov. 21: Netflix announces plans to raise $400 million by issuing debt and selling its stock. The move raises new fears about Netflix's financial strength as it girds for losses next year. It would be Netflix's first annual loss in a decade.

Dec. 6: Hastings appears before an investors' conference in New York, where he laments the company's recent mistakes but predicts they will be forgotten as Netflix's Internet video service continues to reshape the entertainment industry.

Dec. 22: Netflix says Hastings's stock option awards will be cut by 50 percent to $1.5 million in 2012. His base salary remains unchanged at $500.000.

Jan. 4, 2012: Netflix delivers its first good news in months, sending its stock up 11 percent. The company, which delivers movies and TV shows online and by mail, says customers had streamed more than 2 billion hours of video in the fourth quarter.

Jan. 25: Netflix releases figures showing it regained almost as many U.S. customers as it lost following the price hike. It ended December with 24.4 million subscribers in the U.S., a gain of 600,000 from the end of September. It had lost 800,000 last summer. The results came after the close of market, and the company's stock soared 22 percent the next day.

Feb. 6: Verizon Communications Inc. and Coinstar Inc. unveil plans to challenge Netflix with its own streaming service to bundle with DVD rental kiosks operated by Coinstar's Redbox division. Getting an extensive library of streaming content to rival Netflix's will be expensive, though. Netflix, meanwhile, debuts its first original TV series, an eight-episode drama called "Lilyhammer," as it hopes to differentiate itself from rivals.

Tuesday: As part of an effort to offer more exclusive material, Netflix locks up the right to show "The Artist" and other movies from The Weinstein Co. before the films are released to leading pay-TV channels such as Showtime and HBO. On the same day the multiyear deal is announced, Comcast Corp. announces plans to undercut Netflix with a less expensive version of a service that will stream old TV series and movies to devices with high-speed Internet connections.

Netflix streaming would be awesome if all (or the majority) of studios would allow their movies to be streamed. Sadly, the movie industry is incredibly slow and resistive to technological advancements and aim to cuddle their movies instead of letting the world view them. Studios want more money, plain and simple. Netflix, Blockbuster, Amazon, Apple, etc. ALL have their hands tied by annual contracts with these studios. It's a lose lose situation - Viewers lose because they can't see the movies they would like. Netflix loses because they can't offer their customers all the movies they want. And, Studios lose because their films are coveted by the studio instead of being viewed by millions.

Netflix did not regain it customers back and their streaming did not go up. They lost stars programing on their streaming and now only offering half the content for streaming that they used to have. Everyone I know that used netflix dropped them and are now using redbox. I am one and have no plans of going back.

a early user can't help but notice Netflix has about 1/3 of the content it used to have. The press seems to be ignorant of it.

      Not a netflix user.

If they could put some kind of "closed-captions" on streamed movies they would be much more attractive to me. I am hard of hearing and need the captions.

It's not the price hike that I'm angry about, it's the actual quality of the service. They delay new releases so you get them a month late, and their streaming selection is full of movies I don't want to watch. If they fixed these two things, I'd go back.
      • Kgunn662 3 mths ago
The movie studios delay the releases not Netflix. Get it straight.
      • Tom 3 mths ago
Kgunn, NF has an agreement with the studios to delay the releases. You get it straight, idiot.

Eric is right. Many of the movies in Netflix can only be watched on DVD. I don't want to get DVD's in the mail, I want to stream the movies. I also don't want to pay double to watch those movies. Even though Netflix says you can have both services for one low price, on MY computer, am offered two options still, streaming and/or mail. I am also offered two prices. $8. or $16. Now this does not seem to match up with what they are saying publicly. Therefore, I just dropped Netflix.

The only reason to own Netflix is if you watch a lot of TV shows. Movies, stick to Redbox
      • Tiffany D 3 mths ago
I'm considering just that..but with Hulu Plus rather than Netflix.

$1.5 million in stocks for doing a really crappy job and making huge mistakes. Occupy Netflix! ha ha

And they got all their customers back with 60% higher price. Now who's laughing all the way to the bank? They only pretended to be sorry, it was a very smart move.

I personnally don't believe they have regained the lost US customers. There's still a lot of doubt about the content available and in about a month they lose a big portion of their online choices when Starz pulls their movies, to be replaced by.... what?
    • Markel Gibbons  •  3 mths ago
      Never had Netflix.
      Never will get Netflix.
      • Mike 3 mths ago
you're a loser if you never try new things.
    • Mr. G  •  3 mths ago
Netflix has a great DVD service. I get less than 24hr turn-around. As long as that doesn't change, I'll stay a subscriber to discs. After the price hike, I dropped their streaming service. I had hardly ever used it and when I did it wasn't to watch movies but TV shows (mostly CATV shows like Weeds) because they have few good movies for streaming. They just lost all STARZ content for streaming too. Guess that's today's formula: sell less for more. Plus, ISPs are instituting bandwidth caps.

im a netflix user and i just want it to be able to have all movies available to watch movies instantly and the streaming problem is a mess...... i can never watch a movie or a show without it "loading" and it #$%$ me off..... 7.99 or 16.99 if im paying my money for it... it needs to work and more than 1/2 of the time netflix doesn't work!!!! point blank period!!!
    • yoeddie  •  3 mths ago
well I was an old netflix customer and I am back again. But let me tell you what I've noticed. Alot of the movies and TV shows that were once instant viewing are now on DVD and they took them off instant view. So, if you want to get those movies or shows you have to pay an additional $8. If I were in charge of Netflix, I would offer more selection on the instant video streaming because that's what most people are doing now. DVD's by mail is going by the wayside. If they want to keep the customers that came back, I would suggest very strongly to them that they had better offer everything they got to the people that want instant streaming or they will lose all their new customers.
    • Sam  •  3 mths ago
too bad there is little streaming content worth watching
    • woolrock  •  3 mths ago
Buy low, sell high. Anyone could have seen this comming. Keep your eyes ready for the next "tanking" and get ready to buy. BTW: Never wager more than you can afford to lose.

I would like to go to Blockbuster, but Netflix has a great assortment of streaming compared to BB. If BB had a wider selection of streaming and would make an easy to connect to streaming process...I would go there in a heartbeat.
