Loose Tuna Can Seals Force Recall

Some cans of Bumble Bee tuna are being recalled because the seals on the cans might not be tight enough to prevent contamination, the Food and Drug Administration said today.

The recall is voluntary, and so far there have been no reports of illness associated with the products, the FDA said.

Products subject to the recall are cans of 5-ounce Chunk White Albacore and Chunk Light Tuna with specific product codes. The products were distributed for sale at stores between Jan. 17 and Feb. 28, and many have a "best by" date of January 2016. See the FDA release for a full list of the product codes subject to the recall.

The recalled cans' seals did not meet the company's standards for seal tightness, the FDA said. Loose seals or seams may allow pathogens to get into the cans, spoiling the products.

"Due to can integrity concerns, our top priority at this time is to remove these recalled products from distribution as soon as possible," Steve Mavity, senior vice president of Technical Services and Corporate Quality Assurance at Bumble Bee Foods said in a statement. . "We are working closely with our sales team and with retailers to help expedite the recall. We must assure our consumers and retailers of a safe and quality product so we very much appreciate everyone’s part in disposing of the products with the specific codes indicated."

People who've bought the recalled products should discard them. Those with questions about the recall, or about reimbursement, should contact Bumble Bee Consumer Affairs 24 hours a day at (800) 800-8572.
