Los Angeles teacher's aide arrested for lewd acts

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The FBI says a Los Angeles high school teacher's aide was arrested on campus for investigation of sexual contact with a 15-year-old student — the third such arrest in recent weeks in the nation's second-largest school district.

An FBI spokeswoman says Fremont High School teacher's aide Alain Salas was booked for investigation of contact with a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense.

Superintendent John Deasy (DAY'-see) told KNX radio that Salas was arrested during a child sex investigation, but he doesn't have any details.

Former third-grade teacher Mark Berndt was arrested on 23 felony counts that include allegations he fed his semen to Miramonte Elementary School students. A second Miramonte teacher, Martin Springer, has pleaded not guilty to committing three lewd acts on a girl.

OK, so how many Catholic / religious clergy have been 'DETAINED" for fondeling / having SEX with little boys ??? Double standard is poison for any society.

When teachers bang kids it's a "lewd act". When everyone else bangs kids it's pedophilia. See the problem?

"Pedophilia" is just a sexual attraction to minors. It's through no fault of their own that people are attracted to minors since you can't choose attraction. Therefore, "pedophilia" is neutral just like hetero and homosexuality. Molestation or abuse or rape is a different story, of course. Grow up.

I have an idea. I know it will never fly in California, but it's worth mentioning. Tell every school teacher and administrator that their jobs depend on them policing their co-workers. It is THEY who have to root out the pervs amongst them or else no more job. Period.

Mr. Wolf....That kind of activity brought the NAZIS to power. Where you from?

@Reina - do you wear blinders when it's a woman teacher with an underage male
      • FedupwithBS 3 mths ago
Jim..No I don't wear blinders..A woman teacher is just as sick as the male teacher in my opinion. But this topic was regarding a MALE teacher assistant, so I focused on the gender of the offender along with the situation at hand :P

Very odd, whenever I read one of these stories and then see their picture it seems that the majority of these guys have a certain 'look' to them. I cannot pinpoint the look but it's definitely a certain look to them.

yes the typical evil sinister creepy look ...the clear negative vibes from their body ...we should teach our kids face-reading

The other issue revolves around the make up of the kids in the LAUSD school system which is predominantly Hispanic. When the school system and the adults in the home do not teach American culture and customs to the kids, you run into these issues. If you are traditional Mexican, it is ok for an older man to court a younger girl for marriage. When I grew up in South Central LA there were many relationships like this in our neighborhood. The problem with this guy is that he used his culture and position to pray on young girls for sexual gratification. i would not be surprised if he has had young girls over to his house or apartment before this incident.

They have their own union. As do the principals, vice principals, deans, office workers, custodians, plant managers, carpenters, plumbers, and IT staff. At least in LAUSD. In other school districts administrators just join a non profit corporation like AXA instead of a union that performs the same functions but gets better tax breaks. Why would you care about a state pension anyway? Is anyone asking about your social security? You don't understand how the retirement systems of the last 30 years work differently than what you think you know. Parrot. Help out a teacher and stop bashing them. You wouldn't even know how much abuse teachers see from parents, relatives, and other children because they are gag ordered by law. Dig a little deeper in to 'payoffs' and you will find that the school districts 'payoff' the teachers the pay they would of earned while they were out on leave while the police investigate. They do this to terminate the employee without having to go to the state board. It is the state board who actually fires the person. The distict just puts them up to be fired and needs confirmation to follow through without being sued. They do this because if the employee is found Not Guilty or the employee gets off on technicality ( like the police screwed up the evidence or forgot to read their rights when arresting them), then the employee cannot return to work in that district. Otherwise the employee/ molester could sue for millions and go work in another district. Or even worse force the school district to hire the alleged molester back and not be able to prosecute them in the future. And all that has nothing to do with the unions. That is just state law. The union just enforces the standard contract that all the employees have. That usually ends up being leave time until the police are done with their job.

I kind of feel sorry for Superintendent Deasy. With the previous political appointments of Romer and Admiral Brewer and then the hand over of the problems to the old blood Cortinez, this guy has his hands full. I don't agree with everything he does but he is confronting the issues head on. Otherwise there would not be be the number of accusations supported by the police coming forward. The teachers are taking the brunt of the blame by people who do not understand how the law is set up and how the school districts, employees and unions have to work around the law. My hope is that he keeps up this level of scrutiny on the administration in ALL its functions. There has been a big political push for standardized testing as the means for evaluation. There has not been a push for actual human oversight. My opinion is that the cost of administrators is perceived as higher than paying the conglomerates like McGraw Hill who also owns S&P, or Houghtin Mifflin that want to sell testing, teaching, and book materials to an entity that is forced to pay astronomically high prices in a guaranteed 'market'. My hope is that the administration (superintendent, local superintendents, principals, vice principals, deans, coordinators...) are to be reorganized and held to perform more interactive observation and evaluation of their staff and that they are held to higher standards themselves. For too long everyone has heard the mantra of No Child Left Behind is creating a generation of bubble in test takers and our hands are tied. New teachers have a two year window after being hired in which they can be fired. It can be extended if the person is up for dismissal immediately, but it requires vigilance- the District DOES NOT have that, but from the look of Deasy, he does. I hope it rubs off.

Whether it is the teachers in california, the clergy in chicago or college football coaches in pennsylvania, it is clear that committing sex crimes against children is perfectly acceptable. It is only getting caught that is illegal.

This is another scar on the history of LAUSD. You should never have a TA that believes it is ok to have anything more than a mentor relationship with a child. There needs to be better policing and more strenuous process placed toward hiring of adults that work with children. The policies with LAUSD needs to change on how certain programs can have adults in class with children. The sad part is that this type of thing happens more than s being discovered, but there can always be change.
