Loss amid normalcy at hotel where Whitney died

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — As the soulful funeral of Whitney Houston played out a continent away, it was largely business as usual at the glamorous place where the singer died one week earlier. Yet from the fourth floor to the sidewalk out front, a sense of loss prevailed Saturday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Houston was found dead Feb. 11 in the bathtub of her fourth-floor room, just a few hours before she was to attend record executive Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy party in the ballroom downstairs.

Tourists milled about the Beverly Hilton's vast lobby Saturday morning while Houston's celebrity-studded funeral aired live from New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, N.J. It was in stark contrast to last weekend's chaotic hotel scene of photographers, police, paramedics and fans.

Lined with black-and-white photos of Hollywood stars, the hallway on the fourth floor where Houston died was empty and silent, and without security. Only housekeeping staff could be seen going room to room. Houston's suite will remain vacant indefinitely, according to the hotel.

Downstairs, at the Circa 55 Restaurant, a bar area with the eatery's only televisions remained mostly empty for the three-and-a-half-hour memorial service. Instead, guests seemed to favor a sunny poolside dining area nearby. With the Oscars just a week away, life goes on in Hollywood.

But even if most folks chose to avoid publicly watching the funeral, some grieved in their own personal way.

Hotel guest Matthew Ingram, 57, of San Francisco stopped to watch part of the funeral on his way from breakfast and became overwhelmed with emotion when recalling his love and appreciation for Houston.

"You feel the connection, being here. That's half the reason my wife and I chose to stay here for four days was because of her, Whitney, and also to see my sister," he said. "We have all of Whitney's records. Everybody's connected to her through her music, her charm, her beauty."

The ultimate homage to Houston, said Ingram, was going up to the room where she died.

"We went to the fourth floor yesterday. You close your eyes, standing there," he said, starting to cry."

Just outside the hotel, a growing make-shift memorial to Houston was spread out on the sidewalk.

Shiny red "Happy Valentine's Day" balloons waved back and forth in the breeze. Colorful flowers, furry teddy bears and pictures of a smiling Houston sat next to lit votive candles and dozens of condolence notes. A small but steady stream of fans took photos as they passed by on foot and in cars and tour buses.

One note scrawled in black marker, accented by a drawing of a teddy bear holding a heart, read, "To the most beautiful voice in the world. We love you Whitney." Yet another longer letter began, "I'm sorry you had to go through everything you went through. You were too young to go."

So far, Whitney is the only contempory singer who sang the National Anthem with vigor and pride. Before her, it was Kate Smith.

Whitney's star on the boulevard was offered to her in the mid nineties. The mystery is why she never accepted it. I was wondering what they were going to do with that room. It's so eerie that this is the 'Hotel California' from the song,...' you can check out any time you want...but you can never leave.' This is a serious tragedy...everything just feels flat. The interview she gave Oprah explains a lot, I recommend it.

She was dead about the neck in that interview.. she was slurring her words and struggling to focus on what was going on.. you could tell she was trying not to act stoned..

I see what you mean, she was struggling to keep focus, but I still believe her story.

A regular person dies in a hotel room and it may close down, a celebrity dies in your Hotel room and its the best thing ever for publicity, business, reputation....funny

Hard to believe how, why, her body remained in that hotel room for 9-hours after her passing. That grisly, chilling, nasty info should NOT have been shared with the public - we had no need to know.

Whitney's voice coach said on 20/20 that she had lost her voice, she had ruined it. He tried to help her get it back, but with all the smoking and drugs she didn't take care of herself. And she didn't have real friends around her to help her. I just hope her daughter sees what happened to her mom, and doesn't go down the same road. It's a shame Whitney didn't see all this love for her BEFORE she died.

I'm sorry Whitney Houston died. Sorry she died at a young age and sorry she died so needlessly. I'm also sorry for this constant wailing about it. She was doing drugs and alcohol for years, it was bound to take a toll. Seems mostly what folks are grieving is the loss of the Whitney who was many years ago, not the Whitney of today who had lost her once-glorious voice and still struggled with her addictive habits. I keep reading about her great love for her daughter but it wasn't enough to keep her away from the drugs and alcohol. Let's hope her example doesn't lead her daughter down the same self-destructive path.

We've mourned the loss of Whitney Houston. She is another sad lesson in the dangers of drugs and alcohol. She didn't do anything of such significance to warrant national mourning. Flying flags at half-mast was more an insult to those who deserve such an honor. Whitney Houston didn't die serving her country, she died serving her own addictions.

So could we allow her family to continue with their grief in private and could the rest of us, journalists especially, put this story and Ms. Houston to rest?

I pray that she can rest in peace, I also pray for her mom and daughter, I lost my mother and my brother and it is truly a missing void. So I hope despite all her shortcomings we can see her as a daughter, mother, sister, friend and a great singer. We all have shortcomings and who are we to judge what she did or didnt. Peace One Love

I attended Whitney Elizabeth Houstons "GOING HOME" celebration today from 8am until 4pm Central time. When I walked away today, I felt the love, the holy spirit and the gift that Whitney had inside of her. It gave me the feeling that I had known Whitney all my life and not one time had I ever met her in person. It was GOD'S Love that he had for her and the Love of GOD that she shared with us all during her time while here on this Earth, that I felt. I know in my Heart, that one day we will finally get to have this meeting in person, her & I, because she is now singing in GOD"S Choir everday and I will get my chance to be there with her, when my day comes, when I, will be "GOING HOME" !!!
