A low in jobs, mobility, marriage for young adults

WASHINGTON (AP) — Call it the recession's lost generation.

In record-setting numbers, young adults struggling to find work are shunning long-distance moves to live with Mom and Dad, delaying marriage and buying fewer homes, often raising kids out of wedlock. They suffer from the highest unemployment since World War II and risk living in poverty more than others — nearly 1 in 5.

New 2010 census data released Thursday show the wrenching impact of a recession that officially ended in mid-2009. It highlights the missed opportunities and dim prospects for a generation of mostly 20-somethings and 30-somethings coming of age in a prolonged slump with high unemployment.

"We have a monster jobs problem, and young people are the biggest losers," said Andrew Sum, an economist and director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University. He noted that for recent college grads now getting by with waitressing, bartending and odd jobs, they will have to compete with new graduates for entry-level career positions when the job market eventually does improve.

"Their really high levels of underemployment and unemployment will haunt young people for at least another decade," Sum said.

Richard Freeman, an economist at Harvard University, added: "These people will be scarred, and they will be called the 'lost generation' — in that their careers would not be the same way if we had avoided this economic disaster."

Beyond the economy's impact, the new figures also show a rebound in the foreign-born population to 40 million, or 12.9 percent, the highest share since 1920. The 1.4 million increase from 2009 was the biggest since the mid-decade housing boom and could fuel debate in this election season about U.S. immigration strategy.

Most immigrants continue to be low-skilled workers from Latin America, with growing numbers from Asia also arriving on the bet that U.S. jobs await. An estimated 11.2 million immigrants are here illegally.

Seniors 65 and older tended to return to or stay put in their jobs, accounting for the few U.S. employment gains in recent months. About 1 in 6 older Americans is now in the labor force — the highest level since the 1960s, before more generous Social Security and Medicare benefits made it more attractive to retire.

Nationwide, employment among young adults 16-29 stood at 55.3 percent, down from 67.3 percent in 2000 and the lowest since the end of World War II. Young males who lacked a college degree — typically black and Hispanic — were most likely to lose jobs due to reduced demand for blue-collar jobs in construction, manufacturing and transportation during the downturn. Among teens, employment was less than 30 percent.

In all, the employment-to-population ratio for all age groups from 2007-2010 dropped faster than for any similar period since the government began tracking the data in 1948. In the past year, 43 of the 50 largest U.S. metropolitan areas continued to post declines in employment, led by Charlotte, N.C., Jacksonville, Fla., Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Detroit, all cities experiencing a severe housing bust, budget deficits or meltdowns in industries such as banking or manufacturing.

Without work, young adults aren't starting careers and lives in new cities, instead hanging out with their parents.

Among adults 18-34, the share of long-distance moves across state lines fell last year to roughly 3.2 million people, or 4.4 percent, the lowest level since World War II. For college graduates, who historically are more likely to relocate out of state, long-distance moves dipped to 2.4 percent.

Opting to stay put, roughly 5.9 million Americans 25-34 last year lived with their parents, an increase of 25 percent from before the recession. Driven by a record 1 in 5 young men who doubled up in households, men are now nearly twice as likely as women to live with their parents.

Marriages fell to a record low last year of just 51.4 percent among adults 18 and over, compared with 57 percent in 2000. Among young adults 25-34, marriage was at 44.2 percent, also a new low.

Broken down by race and ethnicity, 31 percent of young black men lived in their parents' homes, compared with 21 percent of young Latino men and 15 percent of young white men. At the state level, New York had the highest share of young men living with their parents at 21 percent, followed by New Jersey and Hawaii, all states with higher costs of living. Most of the cities with low percentages of young adults living at home were in the Midwest.

Homeownership declined for a fourth consecutive year, to 65.4 percent, following a peak of 67.3 percent in 2006.

"Many young adults are essentially postponing adulthood and all of the family responsibilities and extra costs that go along with it," said Mark Mather, an associate vice president at the private Population Reference Bureau. He described a shift toward a new U.S. norm — commonly seen in Europe — in which more people wait until their 30s to leave the parental nest.

"Some of these changes started before the recession but now they are accelerating, with effects on families that could be long term," Mather said.

In all, the District of Columbia plus 14 states had the largest ratios of college graduates to high-school dropouts — more than 3 to 1. Several of these places, including the District of Columbia and states with larger immigrant populations, also had the widest income gaps between rich and poor.

The number of Hispanic children in poverty rose by half a million to 6.1 million last year, led by California, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and Nevada, making up a majority of the increase in total child poverty. Hispanics now comprise 37 percent of children in poverty, compared with 30 percent for whites and 27 percent for blacks.

"We are really at a crossroads," said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution. "These new young immigrants and their children need a pathway to the middle class — good educations, affordable housing and jobs — at the same time federal and state budgets are strapped for funds. While we face tough choices, the quality of our future labor force depends on meeting their needs."

    Other census findings:

—About 1 in 4 families with children is headed by single mothers, a record high. Among young families with a head of household younger than 30, the poverty rate jumped from 30 percent in 2007 to 37 percent. In contrast, poverty remained at a low 5.7 percent for families with a head of household 65 or older.

—The number of households receiving food stamps swelled by 2 million to 13.6 million, meaning that nearly 1 in 8 receives the government aid. The highest shares of recipients are in Oregon, Tennessee, Michigan, Kentucky and Mississippi. Among households receiving food stamps, more than half have children.

The 2010 numbers are from the American Community Survey, which queries 3 million households. In some cases, figures are supplemented with data from the Current Population Survey to establish historical trends.

Following the quick understanding of this Political article and title; that is exactly why I chose to never remarry ever since 1987; not only from a taste of betrayal, which left deep scars and emotional upsets for myself for quite sometime (trying to make sense of why this happened for myself; as if it was my fault, when it was not), but also the regularly low paid jobs that I got hired for leading me to decide in not marrying due to the type of incomes I was receiving along my way within the workforce and how difficult it actually was in making one's dreams come true. To this very day I do not regret having chosen to not have a family of my own, and the sad thing about this choice is yet how so many married people want to continue to unfairly prosecute or should I say, harrass so many singles who choose not to have the FAMILY lifestyle, which the White CollarClasses had only helped to contribute in; Making more singles happen because of the only emphasis of what will make a marriage or sincere relationship work and LAST is THE MONEY, Profits, or the show of the owning of large assets: I personally say, those who have the more of vanities are all the ones who have no idea in what consists in making a GOOD, HONEST, Loyal and worry free relationship; they are the ones who make a relationship as being known the WORST Half of it in the long run.

The problem is that we've sold off and dismantled our industrial base. In the past, when things got sticky, we could produce our way out of it. Now, we have nothing to fall back on. It's not Obama's fault; not is it entirely Bush's fault. This stuff began 30 years ago.

been longer than that we had 60 years of democrates running the congress and only once during clinton years a republican congress and during those years we were prosperous and everyone gave credit to clinton though it was a republican congress that made it happen

Regulations, unions, taxes, and government greed and dishonesty from all parties drove the industrial base out of the US. No one, two, three, or four President's are to blame. It's the all political groups and their own agendas that are driving us down the road to goodness knows what.

Because you still use them, even though they sub out the jobs.

Stop using companies that out source their labor and if they want you they need to have an American doing the job.

These companies rake in record profits year after year. They can definitely afford it. The government has the power to prevent certain types of foreign business, but they do nothing because they are bought out by these companies.

Hard to get married when you are poor. Hard to move out of your parent's house when you are broke. Hard to find a job when you are poor and broke. Man, it's hard all over with life passing you by...

I'm a member of that generation. We're so unbelievably screwed. No jobs. Can't go to school cause we can't afford it, or those who did are now going to be paying off the debt for the rest of their lives and aren't in any better position. Tuition goes up every #$%$ semester in California, almost literally. It's like 3x the cost compared to 2000-2001 at the Cal States. Financial aid hasn't gone up in almost 30 years if I remember correctly. No money. Living at home. Everyone is so #$%$ depressed. And those who are in 'the other boat' aren't doing great either. Like one of my closest friends who does actually have two jobs -and works 50+ hours a week and goes to school full time.Lost generation, man you said it. And worst of all is that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Everyone who sees clearly knows this is not 'a recession'. This is the new reality. We literally don't know what we're going to do.

Its not Obama way, its wrong policies since the late 80s and 90s, when no body had a right plan to face the rising cost of oil. Add to that the wars mr bush put the world in. Don't forget the bankers who have their own hidden government controlling our lives. If I disagree with Obama, I disagree he didn't put these people in jails. I said it before, these two parties don't serve the Americans anymore because one is idiot and the other serve the hidden government if you want to call it. I hope we see another party in this country. Plus As you said the recession is a reality that may last till the end of this decade. We have to live with it and change our life style, we should be more economic.

Young people these days have a much higher probability of being thrown in prison than landing a good job regardless of their education or work experience if they are currently unemployed. More than 1 in 31 American adults is either in prison, jail or on probation on a given day. In many places in the country, it is more like 1 in 10 adults under legal supervision. The legal picture for minorities is scarier. Half of the entire Black male population of Baltimore in their 20's is under legal supervision. Thousands of newer stricter laws with mandatory minimum jail sentences for nonviolent crimes are being passed every year. Since the 70's, America's prison population has exploded all while jobs have been outsourced by the millions and wages have stagnated during this same period. America only accounts for less 5% of the world's population yet the good ol' U.S. of A accounts for a quarter of the world's prison population. It is a tried and true fact that unemployment is directly correlated with getting in trouble with the law. Long term unemployment is also highly correlated with drug and alcohol abuse which is treated as a crime in America rather than mental health condition that needs to be treated. So sad. America would rather pay 30K a year to keep nonviolent healthy able bodied adults locked up for years at a timer rather than pay them 15K a year to be free at a menial job. Massive incarceration is bad for society but is good for wealthy private prison owners and investors. Youth imprisonment is set to go up because rich people need to feel safe in a environment where millions of young people are broke and unemployed and soon to be homeless and hungry because most kids have broke parents as well.

What happened? Manufacturing and construction industries. That's what happened. Those jobs went bye-bye either outsourced or given to immigrants. AMERICA DOESN'T MAKE ANYTHING ANYMORE....That's the problem. Those low-skilled and entry level work is what people in the old days used to build their careers off of. Those jobs now no longer exist. And we are stuck with mainly service jobs. Many of which are dead-end and low-pay.

Welcome to the global economy folks. Think of it this way, if you had 200 buckets of water, with the US bucket being the largest and you attach them all together, the water will seek its own level, and the US bucket will drop to meet the same level as all other buckets. The only country making out is the Chinese, because they artificially manipulate their economy. Our leaders are too stupid to see this problem, or are too cowardly to address it.

I am 28 and that sounds about right. Everything I had worked towards in the Construction Trade is now useless. I can't even get a job at "Home Depot" because I am "Overqualified". What kind of B.S. are we going to have to deal with until we are 40 years old. I wasn't even able to start buying a house before I lost my livelihood. Baby boomers have had their chance at life and were able to succeed or fail under their own steam. My age group never even got a chance and the next one; I cringe at what they graduate into. It's not about not being an adult it is the definition of adult being changed. I have made a choice not to have any kids and right now abstinence is the only method open to me as I don't have the money for a vasectomy. If I want kids I will adopt but only when I can afford it... sounds like an "Adult" choice to me.

This economic disaster was planned in the70s. The big companies get rid of their retirement programs and have the workers invest in IRAs and 401s. Crash the market so the workers can't retire. Eventually the world is run by big business (they are already doing that) and the workers vie for jobs that really is a form a slavery. Sure you will get paid for your work but the pay will not be a living wage.

The golden age of the USA is over...the standard of living for most is moving toward those in a 3rd world country. We will be a rich-man poor-man country before 2020...if the USA lasts that long. If I am wrong, what signs are out there to show hope ?

"Marriages fell to a record low last year of just 51.4 percent among adults 18 and over, compared with 57 percent in 2000. Among young adults 25-34, marriage was at 44.2 percent, also a new low." Notice the fact that the marriage rate declined drastically during the Bush years! This was right in line with the faltering economy that the Republicant's created at that time. How could any young couple plan to marry and expect to financially support such a marriage? The Bush years of financial meddling came crashing down at the end of his second term. What have the Republicant's done to make it financially possible for younger couples to marry? Nothing....absolutely nothing! But they sure are quick and aggressive to get anti-gay marriage ammendments added to their state constitutions and laws enacted that "protect" the sanctity of marriage! (I guess they don't care about the high divorce rate in this country and the unfortunate children who must be raised in single parent homes, they don't seem to want to enact laws that would restrict divorces!). The sanctity of marriage is assailed by more heterosexual divorces than by same sex couples who marry! What hipocrytes these Republicant's are! What hipocrytes!

The legacy of Reagan's "Trickle down" economic theory coming to fruition. His VP, Bush Sr., in a rare display of political candor, declared it "Voodoo Economice". Truer words have not been spoken. The original architect of irresponsible spending, he managed to TRIPLE our national debt, winning a landslide election on the promise of fiscal reform. The good news: the weathy are now much better off. Thanks for nothing, Ronnie.

In the USA unionized government employees work 30 years for 60 years of pay, while private sector employees work 60 years for 60 years pay (if they can find employment).

If most of the government non military functions were privatized and placed for bid every two years, government spending for this work would be cut in half.

An alternative to privatizing government functions would be if unions accepted defined contribution pension plans in place of defined benefit plans. This would also cut spending in half.

The money saved could be used to hire most of these young people to do needed infrastructure work on a reasonable pay basis.
