    Loyola University Maryland to Offer Master's Degree in Theological Studies

    Loyola University Maryland will launch a new master’s degree program in theological studies in fall 2012. The 48-credit Master of Theological Studies (MTS) program is designed to appeal both to students interested in eventually pursuing a Ph.D. in Theology, as well as those seeking a master’s degree to advance careers in education, ministry, or other fields.

    The program encompasses a wide spectrum of topics in the field, including Scripture, historical theology, systematic theology, comparative theology, languages, and ethics. Students, who will complete a six-credit thesis at the end of the MTS program, will also receive sustained mentoring, advice, and direction from program faculty on how to focus their interests in theology in a particular area, as well as how to adapt their curricular choices to prepare them for the next level of academic work or new professional challenges.

    “Loyola already has a strong undergraduate program in theology, as well as a dedicated team of faculty representing many diverse aspects of the field and eager to expand their teaching to more advanced students,” said Rev. James J. Miracky, S.J., dean of Loyola College, the University’s school of arts and sciences. “We’ve been considering a graduate-level program in theology for almost a decade, and believe that the new MTS gives us a unique opportunity to expand our graduate offerings with a program that both meets the needs of today’s advanced theology students and aligns closely with Loyola’s Jesuit mission and identity.”

    Applications for the program, which is designed to be completed in two years of full-time study (or four years for students taking classes part time), are now being accepted. More information about the program and how to apply is available at http://www.loyola.edu/gradinfo/theology.

    Loyola’s master’s degree program in theological studies joins the University’s existing graduate programs in psychology, speech-language pathology, computer science, liberal studies, pastoral counseling, education, and business.
