‘Madam Secretary’ Ratings Fall, ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Returns Steady, ‘Secrets & Lies’ Rises, ‘A.D.’ Slips
With an anger translator backup, President Barack Obama may have had his best White House Correspondents’ Dinner so far on Saturday night. But for CBS’ freshman political drama Madame Secretary, this was not a weekend it will want to remember. While Madam Secretary (1.0/3) was the most-watched show of Sunday night, the Téa Leoni-starring series bombed to the tune of a 29% decline among adults 18-49 from its last original April 12 (that episode actually ran from 8:16-9:16 PM that night due to NCAA Tournament overruns).
Last night’s demo result is a low and a lot less fun of a night than Leoni and co-star Tim Daly likely had as guests at the WHCD the night before. Compared to the last show that ran from 8-9 PM, last night’s episode and its treaty with Iran storyline was down 9% from its April 5 broadcast. Still, the show’s audience of 10.43 million last night helped CBS win the night among total viewers with 8.9 million.
The rest of CBS’ night was pretty steady with 60 Minutes (1.1/4) dipping 8% from last week and The Good Wife (1.0/3) slipping 9% from its last new episode April 12. The latter result is a series low match for the acclaimed drama in preliminary numbers. Freshman Battle Creek (0.7/2) was even with its last original April 12, also tying a low in preliminary numbers.
ABC won Sunday among 18-49s with a 1.5/5 rating that saw Secrets And Lies (1.7/5) snag traction to rise 13% from last week, when it faced part of the 50th Academy Of Country Music Awards on CBS. In fast nationals, that’s a high for the freshman drama. It’s also the second week in a row S&L topped NBC’s A.D. The Bible Continues (1.1/3) in the 9 PM slot. The biblical series from Mark Burnett and Roma Downey slipped 8% from its April 19 episode, which was down double digits from the week before.
The rest of ABC’s night was steady, with America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.5/5) bopping up 7% from its April 19 episode. Once Upon A Time (1.7/5) and Revenge (1.0/3) were even with last week’s broadcasts. NBC’s two-hour Dateline (1.0/4) at 8 PM rose 25% from last week, while newbie American Odyssey (0.5/2) was even with its low of April 19. Secrets & Lies and OUAT were tied for the night’s top-rated show.
Back for the first time in more than a month, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.5/4) saw a small rise. The Fox comedy at 8:30 PM bopped up 7% from the demo result of its March 15 show. There was a mixed result among the network’s animated comedies: Bob’s Burgers (0.9/3) was down 10% from its last original March 22 whole The Simpsons was up 7% from last week and Family Guy (1.5/4) dropped 12%. Non-animated comedy The Last Man On Earth (1.4/4) held its own and was even with its April 19 telecast.
