Madison County Sheriff's Office deputy dies after suffering medical emergency

Dec. 12—On Tuesday, The Madison County Sheriff's Office confirmed the passing of Captain Sam Manley, who passed away from a medical emergency while on duty.

Manly was a 71-year-old retiree of the Richmond Police Department, having served as Assistant Chief of Police until 2005, and a dedicated, long-time employee of the Sheriff's Department. He also served for 27 years in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Drill Instructor.

The MCSO reported that Manley was not feeling well around lunchtime on Tuesday. In response, he was reportedly taken to Baptist Health Richmond by Madison County Emergency Medical Services.

Captain Manley died at the hospital in the early afternoon.

Captain Manley was escorted by a procession of law enforcement from the hospital to a funeral home in Berea.

Funeral services will be Tuesday Dec. 19, 2023 at 12 noon at Church on The Rock with Rev. Larry Burton and Chaplin Josh Horn officiating, burial will take place in the Madison County Memorial Gardens, with Military Honors.

The Madison County Sheriff's office will serve as Honor guard and pallbearers as well as Jay Manley, Savannah Miller, and Ryan Young. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5-8 pm also at Church on The Rock in Berea. Lakes Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
