MADRID (AP) -- Madrid's mayor says the city's financial dealings with Real Madrid, which are under scrutiny by the European Commission, were legal.

Ana Botella says her city's agreements with Real Madrid were "scrupulously legal."

The European Union said Wednesday that it was considering opening an official probe into whether Real Madrid and several other clubs in different European leagues benefited unfairly from state aid and tax policies.

EU spokesman Antoine Colombani says the Real Madrid case involved possible collusion with the city over land prices.

Real Madrid spokeswoman Maribel Perez de Valmorisco told The Associated Press that the club had no comment.
