Magnitude-5.9 quake hits near Japan nuclear site

TOKYO (AP) — A strong earthquake struck Thursday morning near the Japan nuclear power plant hit by a powerful tsunami earlier this year. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-5.9 quake struck shortly before 4:30 a.m. local time. It hit 62 miles (101 kilometers) east of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. The quake struck at a depth of 23 miles (37 kilometers).

The quake struck 151 miles (244 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not immediately issue a tsunami alert.

Similar quakes have struck in the region since a March 11 magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami wiped out part of Japan's northeastern coast and left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing.

The March tsunami also touched off a nuclear crisis when it heavily damaged the Fukushima plant, forcing about 100,000 people to flee their homes. They still have no idea when they can return.

The region lies on the "Ring of Fire" — an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim. About 90 percent of the world's quakes occur in the region.

I have followed this fukushima story with disbelief for lack of a better word.
I was astonished how the updates in the news reports kept trying to downplay the situation. This disaster makes me think anything would be a wiser choice then nuclear power. Radioactivity is way too sketchy. I feel conflicted that anybody uses this outdated source of energy. I know power is necessary but is it worth the risk of our environment and lives. I'd rather be with less than die from radiation. I hope the Japanese people will be ok. I also hope the world can move toward hydrogen power, solar power, and wind power. I figure eventually the U.S. will have a nuclear meltdown or something but of course I hope not.

Hydrogen, solar and wind power also have huge risks. What happens to the source of hydrogen power (dams) when an earthquake hits? You get a mini tsunami in your town. Not to mention, these sources are less efficient than nuclear. The fact is there is no silver bullet.

D Rack you do not get an endless supply of radiation falling on you with those sources.

Why in hell would anyone build the Fukushima plant in a earthquake and volcanic zone?
      • wrongAngle 6 mths ago
You mean why in hell would they build one in Japan? The whole country is an earthquake zone.

EARTH is about to become an earthquake zone

Ah earth quakes here unpredictable, it can happen any where any region anytime that's my point. It don't matter where you live on this planet earth quakes can occur.

90% of earthquakes occur in that region and they had to build a nuclear power plant there...someone made a bad decision.

Theres at least 5 of them in Washington State. Tri-Cities, WA the most toxic piece of ground on Earth and they've got 4 Volcanoes too!

You have a tiny island that has experienced the full effect of two nuclear explosions, they know it is in the Ring of Fire (a known seismic and volcanic timebomb that constantly erupts), and they STILL build nuclear generating plants there. And we know they would let millions die to save face, because saving face is more important to them than breathing. And in three years when California babies have an extra limb or head, there will be no doubt how much we have hidden the truth. Our testacles are the new wasabi.

Maybe someone needs to release some of Tesla's findings on energy production. Nuclear power, and especially Nuclear power plants built in areas known for earthquakes is not only poor planning and insanely stupid judgement, it is also mind boggling. Why would anyone not want to try to introduce other power sources into the world. When there are possibilities of producing power through advanced technological means. I wonder if there is a HARRP base somewhere near by the area.Nah surely not, that is all conspiracy stuff. lol

@d. Rack cyula wow dude! Your really stupid. Go back to school!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm an electrical engineering & computer science college student for christ sakes!!! So i do know what the hell i'm talking about. I have taken more science classes that you idiot!!!!!!!!

you sound like a dumb crack head that didn't finish high school lol and watch to many movies.

Has anybody, denied, justified or lied about the earthquakes? What are you on about?

This is a global travesty. If the earth's population were more cohesive this would not have been allowed. To build a nuclear generator in such an unstable area was beyond reckless. Japan should have been looking at power sources from the sun and water.
    • MP  •  6 mths ago
Dear AP, the plant was hit by a 9.0 earthquake first which you and the rest of the media forget. If there was no tsunami the devastation from the earthquake alone would have been dramatic. The tsunami was mother nature hosing the floor down. Sad to say.

Sorry kids, this isn't something attributed to a fabled All-This or That, but simply the natural forces of Mother Nature still in her midterm growing pains; after all she's only 4.5 billion years old with about that amount left before her mother the Sun runs our of nuclear fuel and expands us out of existance. It is much easier to close the entire Japanese Islands dangerously located nuclear power generation plants than to sit around contemplating something beyond our knowledge of time and space. I, understand though, that is the normal thing to do; when your powerless and frightened, economically invested or just plain ole lazy in forming an opposition to such seemingly benigned devices! So, just sit tight and wait for the mother-of-all earthquakes or metorite to come along and make the decision for you!I personally thinks its high-time for that flat-headed IAEA chief-wannabe to get his head out -of-the-west's-behind and stop trying to misdirect on Iran, but instead setup camp at the Dai-ichi Fukushima meltdown site and find a solution to all the radioactive waste disposal horror-show now running into nightmarish technical endgame scenerios no one wants to openingly talk about. This #$%$ is trying to start WWIII, with a peaceful nuclear NPT compliant state of Iran, while ignoring three nuclear ongoing meltdowns in his very own country of origin. No wonder we as a civilization are on the path of de-evolution and extinction with clowns like this running around trying to save Israel from taking its own medicine and declaring its program for inspections like everybody else accept those bribing our government and congress. And, if Japan goes over the brink of contamination there will be no amount of money or innovation that will put Humpty-Dumpty back together again. Japan is a doomsday scenerio just waiting in plain site!
