Maher tells conservatives: Do not try to claim former Apple CEO Steve Jobs

Talking heads on both the right and the left have attempted, in the wake of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs’s death, to claim their political views were also those held by Jobs. Both Rush Limbaugh and Jesse Jackson argued Jobs fell in line with each of their respective ideologies.

However, HBO’s “Real Time” Bill Maher argued Jobs was probably closer to Jackson than Limbaugh. On his Friday night program, Maher advised conservatives not to try to claim the former Apple CEO as one of their own.

“I want to say one other thing about Steve Jobs “ agree or don’t,” Maher said. “But, I know that he’s one of the few people who liberals and conservatives both like, you know, in the partisan country that we live in. And I just know that the right-wingers are going to try to claim him because he was a giant success. Please don’t do it, right-wingers. He was not one of you. He was not a corporate type. He was an Obama voting, pot-smoking Buddhist. He wasn’t one of you. So don’t try to claim Steve Jobs.”

Maher reminded his audience and viewers Jobs was cut loose by the Apple board of directors, only to come back and run the company again in the late-1990s.

“He got fired by corporate America,” Maher said. “Remember - he got his ass thrown out because he was a little too innovative. He didn’t play the game the way they do.”

Maher’s panelist P.J. O’Rourke, a conservative, gave his reasons for not wanting to claim Jobs. Nonetheless, Maher doubled-down on his “hippie” claim.

“But he was a hippie and I know you have problems with hippies,” Maher said to O’Rourke when explaining why Jobs would identify with the left, which according to the “Real Time” host is what the so-called “Occupy Wall Street” movement is comprised of.

At this juncture does it really make any difference? For certain, Steve Jobs no longer is concerned with such paltry matters...he now belongs to the ages.

It's not pretty and I don't agree with this whole "claiming Steve Jobs" thing after he died, but it matters somewhat because even after his death, people with media outlets still have the potential to tarnish his name.

Steve Jobs may not have been a right wing conservative, but I bet he made sure his tax accountant sure was.

Jobs was a capitalist all the way!

All you political a$$holes go screw yourself. Jobs didn't aline himself with any political party, so quit trying to politicize him. Some people here will relate EVERYTHING back to a political party. Pathetic. These people are the problem...
      • Coraxus 7 mths ago
The video was talking about political ideology, not parties. And whether you like it or not, Steve Jobs was more of a Liberal than any Conservative in America even though he never affiliated himself with any political parties. History in America has shown the Conservatives to be on the wrong side of history. It was the Conservatives that wanted to keep the American colonies under British rule. It was the Conservatives that refused to give up slavery. It was the Conservatives that fought against women's suffrage. And it was certainly the Conservatives that tried to fight against civil rights movement. Oh BTW, did I mention that Jesus Christ was a Liberal?

Problem with right-wing Conservative loonies is that they want to take credit for the good things America has created and dump all the bad stuff onto the Liberals. Hell, they'll try to convince you that all the founding fathers were Conservatives that founded a Christian nation.
      • playnice 7 mths ago
Um.....wow. You REALLY need to brush up on your history. It was the Democratic party that wanted to keep slavery, and it was the Republican party, under a REPUBLICAN president, Abraham Lincoln, that fought to preserve the union and end slavery. You have a right to your opinions and personal political predilections, but if you're going to quote facts, you really ought to get them right. Stop making an #$%$ of yourself and read a f***ing book to FIND OUT the truth, rather than giving in to your assumptions which are based on what you WANT to be true.Dip$hit.

Try to understand the difference between BEING successful and loathing taxes. You can be successful regardless of your politics.

The only claim I'll make is that he was the epitomy of how businesses should work. He was innovative and didn't ask for govt grants to get his company started. Good ideas find a market on their own.

We do know Apple is sitting on 75 Billion in the bank instead of investing their money in people. This Corporate activity is one of the complaints of Occupy Wall Street.

I do admire Steve Jobs, but lets not be msitaken, he was a capitalist. He was not a marist who wanted to share his wealth and creativity. He was also a counter culture type who did not want to fit into corporate lifestyle. So Steve Jobs was a contradiction because he didn't fit into what the left wanted, but didn't fit into right. He was an individual. Which is what america is made of.

"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance---that principle is contempt prior to investigation."
      ---Herbert Spencer
Will you go to heaven when you die? Here's a quick test. Have you ever told a lie,
stolen anything, or used God's name in vain? Jesus said, "Whoever looks at a woman
to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Have you looked
with lust? Will you be guilty on Judgement Day? If you have done those things, God
sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterer at heart (the heart of the matter
is the matter of the heart). The Bible warns that if you are guilty you will end up in hell.
That's not God's will. He sent His Son to suffer and die on the cross for you. You broke
God's Law, but Jesus paid your fine. That means He can legally dismiss your case. He
can commute your death sentence. Jesus also said, "For God so loved the world that
He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have
everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it."
Then He rose from the dead and defeated death. Please repent(turn from sin) today and
trust alone in Jesus, and God will grant you the gift of everlasting life. Then read the Bible
daily and obey it. There is nothing more important than your eternal salvation!
2 Corinthians 4:3-6 states: "And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age(satan) has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ."

It's a fact that Jobs gave to Democrats and was also a liberal. He sure didn't live it that way though. Sorry, he did. He hoarded his wealth. He even kept bonus money on an Atari project that Steve Wozniak did all the work on. He initially denied paternity of his eldest daughter as well. So, he had his faults as a human being. It's a fact that many creative people are liberals. I'm a designer, so I am around them all the time. Fact is, they aren't anymore better than anyone else, because when it comes to money they tell you what to do with yours, but won't practice what they preach with their own. Steve was good at what he did, which was marketing. He ran a company up, instead of down. But I don't see why any side needs to claim him. In the end he was a greedy corporate goon. And frankly, I like that. That's what capitalism is about. That's why he was a success. You can tell his personality, just by comparing him to the other three founders. Out of the three, Steve Wozniak was stand up guy. He had no agenda other than he loved technology. Steve Jobs was great at surrounding himself with people like Wozniak during his life. When Apple made a come back with Jobs at the helm, he became the face of Apple. So naturally, since nobody else got the spotlight, they think Jobs was the sole force behind the success. He was not. The problem is, you can't visualize anyone else being a factor because they were in the shadows.

Steve Jobs was not stupid enough to box himself into moronic labels like liberal and conservative.
