Maine 3-year-old walks mile in middle of night

BAILEYVILLE, Maine (AP) — A 3-year-old Maine girl, possibly confused by a dream, walked a mile to a grocery store in the middle of the night through freshly fallen snow, thinking her mother was inside buying pizza.

Hope Trott woke up in the middle of the night, put on little ruby red shoes, threw a jacket on over her nightdress and walked to the store with the temperature at 29 degrees, police said. An employee found the girl crying outside the store at 4 a.m. Wednesday and called police.

"He got to the door and the little girl came walking down the sidewalk," Melanie Devoe, assistant store manager, said Wednesday. "She was crying, saying, 'My mommy is in there.' He knew she wasn't because the alarm was on and the door was locked.

"He zipped her coat up, and he came in here and called 911, then went back out with her," Devoe said.

Officers followed the child's footprints to her Baileyville home, found the front door open, and thinking a home invasion was in progress, entered with guns drawn, police told the Bangor Daily News (http://bit.ly/yRcafq). They found Hope's parents, Laura and Jesse Trott, and her older siblings, Hunter and Ann, fast asleep.

Laura Trott said it was a frightening experience and she was shocked to find out why police were there. She not sure what caused her daughter to leave the house.

"I don't know if she woke up in a dream and thought I went to the store to get a pizza, but she went to look for me," she said.

The family has since installed a chain and deadbolt to their door.

How scary is that? I once thought my oldest had gotten out of the house while I slept because I could hear a child crying. My neighbors had their window open and I had mine open and I was hearing their son cry. But in that first moment I was up in a flash out the door and looking for her in my yard and everywhere. My husband laughed so hard he was still laughing when I made him install a chain on both our doors and child safety stops on all the windows. Years later after my husband had died I was sleeping with the window up the few inches the safety stops allowed. I heard someone cursing and it woke me up. The man who was trying to break into my home cursed again hit the outside wall by my window and ran off. I hope my husband was smiling for putting them in then. He saved me that night and he wasn't even alive.

That's a good story...and things like that are why I still believe in God. My mother in law passed away suddenly back in '07 and my wife and I struggled to find answers to why she was taken away without warning. Before she passed away, she would spend the day with our newborn daughter every day at our house, babysitting because we didn't really trust too many people with her. She had a stroke in March and passed away a few days later. Well, in October of that year, someone broke into our home and completely destroyed the place...and I often wonder what would have happened if her and my daughter would have been in the house when some violent thug broke in and didn't expect them to be there. Maybe God took her home to spare the life of our daughter....after she passed away, we were forced to put our daughter in daycare, therefore, removing her from the possibility of being home when the house was broken into. I don't know, but sometimes God does work in mysterious ways.

        Wow, what an asinine rationalization.

Yes he does hon that's for sure. I'm terribly sorry for your loss none the less. My mom had a stroke and lived another year afterwards. She was confined to a wheel chair and suffered tremendous depression. Later trying to move from the couch to her wheelchair as my brother had readied her supper she fell and broke her hip. She died a few days after they did surgery to repair her hip from an blood clot going from her arterial line to her heart. They call it an embolism. I thought afterwards that she maybe had just given up on living. She was so frustrated with being stuck in her own body. In someways you might consider your mom in laws passing as a blessing. Strokes and their aftermath can be cruel.

Obviosly K in the second reply does not have children. When my daughter was 3 my wife took a shower, my daughter was fast asleep. In 7 minutes she got up, got a twenty, I left for my wife. Unbolted the front door, rolled her 3 wheel bike out side.. My wife gets out of the shower, checks on her, sees the front door open. Scared, she runs down the street towel on her head, barefoot, in her night gown. Our daughter is peddling her bike, twenty in the basket heading to her brothers school to get him and get some slurppees at 7/11. Fortuneatley my wife caught her in time. Funny story, but my wife was scared to death. We had to reverse the locks on my daughters door and put a locking mechanisum on the widow so she could not escape. I hardly think that is justification for imprisonment. But on the otherhand they would imprison me for reversing the locks.

Bottom line; little girl, and parents both came out lucky. All kinds of evil could've happened. ^5 to store keeper, and Maine police.

I thought the story would end with the parents being arrested for child abuse. Thank goodness the Maine police arent the 'gung-ho' cops of other states.

Funny they didn't get charged with child neglect if they were in Nevada they would of...my son was 6 when he got mad and decided to walk to the store my wife was at. Police found him walking brought him back and we got charged with child neglect, glad the parents didn't get charged...kids do weird things and kids are kids....

I see what you're saying but there is no way a 4 year old child could get out of MY house at ANY time of the day or night without me knowing it.

I did something similar when I was younger (I was about 6 yo) my mom told me to stay with her in the super market or she was going to leave without me when she was finished shopping. Of course I didn't stay and ran to read the latest comics, a little while later I went to find her and didn't see her any where in the store so I figured she had left. I started to walk home and little did I know my mom was flipping out because she couldn't find me. She called the police and had pretty much all the store employees looking for me. I got about half way home when some lady who was working in her yard asked me, if I was alright. I tried to explain what was going on and how my mom left me in the grocery store. She took me inside of her house and gave me some cookies and milk and then called the police. The police ended up taking me home.
FWIW: my mom is actually a very good person and I wouldn't trade her for the world.

My younger son used to walk in his sleep. To name a couple things, we caught him putting shoes in the toilet and standing in the corner peeing against the wall thinking he was in the bathroom. He'd wander around the house with a glazed look in his eyes and he would stare right through you if you talked to him.

Wow. SO very happy she's safe and sound. I have two and a half year old twins, so while this hasn't occurred in our home, it's instructive that it COULD happen, and we need to take precautions. What a little sweetie pie.

Glad this had a happy ending. Kind of curious why the grocery store employee left her outside instead of taking her into the store when he called 911.

One of my kids trying to go out at night is what prompted me to install a lock that they couldn't reach. Thankfully, I was awake and heard him.

I have a 3 yr old girl. She walked off last 4th of July in a park. It takes one second for them to disappear. I get nauseous thinking about it. I feel bad for the parents cause Ive been there. Luckily a Police Officer found her pretty quickly.
