KITTERY, Maine (AP) -- The congressional delegations from Maine and New Hampshire are urging the U.S. Transportation secretary to help fund the replacement for an aging bridge between Kittery and Portsmouth.

The eight members from the two states sent a letter to Secretary LaHood in support of a $25 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant for the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge Replacement Project.

The existing, 70-year-old bridge has been closed multiple times in recent years due to malfunctions and unplanned major repairs.

The goal is to have construction of a replacement bridge finished by 2017. The total cost is estimated to be about $160 million.

There are three bridges between Kittery and Portsmouth. A replacement for the Memorial Bridge is nearing completion.
