    The Mainstreaming of Vegan Diets

TUESDAY, Dec. 27 (HealthDay News) -- Vegan diets are considered by some to be extreme, a strict way of eating that exists on the radical fringes of vegetarianism.

But today, a growing number of people are giving vegan diets a second look, and nutritionists now believe that a well-thought-out vegan eating plan could be the most healthy way to live for most people.

"Properly planned vegan diets are healthy, nutritionally adequate and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of many diseases," said Vandana Sheth, a registered dietitian and nutrition educator in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

Vegan diets are plant-based and exclude all animal products, even items like milk, cheese and eggs that are allowed in some forms of vegetarian diets.

Veganism drew added attention in 2011 from a pair of U.S. notables. Former President Bill Clinton -- long famous for McDonald's runs and barbeque lunches -- announced in August that he had converted to a vegan diet. And domestic doyenne Martha Stewart dedicated an hour-long episode of her TV show in March to the vegan lifestyle.

Research has found that people who follow a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle enjoy a number of health benefits, Sheth said. These include:

    • Lower cholesterol levels.
    • Lower blood pressure.
    • A healthier body mass index.
    • Decreased risk for heart disease.
    • Decreased risk for cancer.
    • Better control and prevention of diabetes.

"They don't have to worry about cholesterol because cholesterol is only found in animal products," Sheth said. "And as you would expect, vegan diets are much higher in fiber."

Sheth added that research has found vegan diets to be appropriate for people at all stages of the life cycle -- even people at crucial stages, such as growing children, pregnant or lactating women, and highly active athletes.

One of the long-standing criticisms of a vegan diet has been that people will miss out on many essential nutrients that are in rich supply in animal products. Nutritionists say that is no longer a serious concern, although people in a vegan lifestyle do need to pay careful attention to their supply of certain nutrients.

Interestingly, protein is not one of the nutrients that vegans need to worry about, even though plants are not the best sources because their proteins do not break down into the full range of amino acids that the human body requires for healthy functioning.

"It's true that most plant foods don't contain all the essential amino acids needed by our bodies, while animal proteins do," said Andrea Giancoli, a registered dietitian in Los Angeles and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. "But a grain plus a bean makes a complete protein. As long as you're getting a variety of those, you are fine -- and they don't need to be consumed at the same time."

Sheth and Giancoli also noted that certain vegan "super foods" like soy products and quinoa have been found to contain proteins that break down all the essential amino acids.

"It is absolutely possible to get enough protein from beans, lentils, tofu, soy products and other plant sources like seeds and nuts," Sheth said. "As long as you're getting a varied amount throughout the day, your body can mix it up and get what it needs."

Nutrients that vegans do have to keep careful track of in their diets, according to Sheth and Giancoli, include vitamin B12, a key nutrient in cell metabolism, nerve function and blood production, and calcium, which is needed for healthy bones. Animal products are rich in vitamin B12, and dairy products contain loads of calcium.

However, vegans can get B12 and calcium from fortified cereals and fortified dairy substitutes such as soy or rice milk. "You need to be a smart consumer and read labels to make sure you're buying products that are fortified," Giancoli said. Dark green leafy vegetables like broccoli, collard greens or kale also are good sources of calcium.

Vegans also have to make sure they get enough iron, which is essential in the creation of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to cells and tissues throughout the body. Again, animal products are much more rich in iron, although plant foods such as dried beans, dark green leafy vegetables and fortified dairy substitutes are good sources.

"Keep in mind that our bodies are able to absorb more iron from food if the meal is also rich in vitamin C," Sheth said. "If you're having spinach, you might have tomatoes or a citrus dressing with it to increase absorption."

Omega-3 fatty acids probably represent the greatest nutritional challenge for vegans, the two nutritionists said. Thought to be critical for cognitive function and healthy cardiovascular function, omega-3s appear in large amounts only in fatty fish such as salmon -- a dietary no-no for vegans.

Some plant sources -- flaxseeds, soybeans, pumpkin seeds and walnuts, for example -- contain a type of omega-3 fatty acid, but it's not the same type found in fish and has not been proven to have the same level of health benefits, Giancoli said.

"There's some concern that vegans may be missing out," she said.

Finally, vegans need to keep in mind that it's just as easy for them to indulge in an unhealthy diet as it is for omnivores, Sheth said.

She recommends that her vegan clients follow the federal government's "My Plate" guidelines for eating, the same as everyone else should. "You're basically just replacing the protein source," Sheth said. "Otherwise, it's the same meal."

Actually, wild-caught salmon, 2-3 times/week is a healhy source for fatty oils, not necessarily a no-no.

Actually- certified organic is no guarantee and its definitely a USDA profit center, and is becoming big factory business just like the big agriculture we all need to get away from- vegan or meat eater. You have to do your homework. I am a grass farmer and raise 100% grass fed beef using 100% organic practices- belted galloway breed. But I don't get "certified" organic. I don't need the government and the USDA telling me Im doing a good job and I don't need to pay the thousands of $$ a year for them to give me some "bonafide" paper. I have 184 inspectors that we have REAL relationships with- they are called customers....we have them to the farm, show them our methods and keep in touch all year. My beef is is loaded with Omega 3s, CLAs and is infinitely better for you than white meat chicken and any other big AG meat. The reason the people are going Vegan, and I really don't blame them, is because of the horrid BIG AG meat products- now those will certainly kill you. They have not been educated on the other side- local fresh grass fed meats, raw milks and cheeses and local produce. We are by nature- omnivores, but if I could not have access to these fresh, local foods, I'd probably go vegan too. But its a lot of work to get all the nutrients you need on that plan. But I salute them for at least taking some step towards better health. Educate yourselves- find local farmers and farmers markets to vette out- and don't make lazy, sweeping statements about natural producers. There are GREAT ones, and there are not so great ones- the same as so called certified organic producers.

I eat very low on the food chain by eating vegan, with the exception of pasture-raised eggs. I cannot eat cheese and dairy, but use nutritional yeast for the high B-12 and "cheesy" flavor I crave. About a dozen times a year of less, I'll have fish.

We try to eat with a low-carbon footprint by purchasing from local growers and seasonally. Also, the pasture-raised eggs are truly happy hens that see sunlight all day and scratch for bugs, so for my conscience, I feel like I am eating compassionately.

My wife has been vegan for over 15 years. I've tried vegan. I get a weak heart and brain fog...and turn into an "angry vegan." :-) And yes, I did the spirulina, flaxseed, micronutrient powders, ect.; Personally, I need a small amount of animal to function properly. So pasture-eggs (2-3 week) and a sparing amount of fish makes me feel BETTER than I ever did with ANY diet.

I bless that which I eat and know that it is helping me to help stay healthy and help make a difference in this world, regardless of what the militant-vegan or extreme-carnivore believes.

I believe in listening to my body and my conscience. Thanks.

hate to break the news to the dietitian but our bodies produce cholesterol. not as much as with -some- animal based products but cholesterol is produced regardless of vegan or not. also just to clue all ya'll and the dietitian on some other curious science, some plant based products can and do raise your LDL ( bad). moderation is the way regardless of vegan or not.
      • JoelW 4 mths ago
no no no. u have not a clue. ever animal produces cholesterol, including humans but in controlled smaller quantites in most cases. it is WHEN other animals carrcasses are consumsued does the BLOOD level in Humans SKYROCKET! I am CERTAIN u r not a Vegan, cause this stupid concept
is grabbed onto by people who are in need to justify eating MEAT!
        no one around this !

enough of fooling yourself, and others less informed on the internet.

baby cats and dogs instintivally go to kill, if a small amimals is places near them.
Human babies, ALL of them will just play with it regardless if it is daneriuos or warm and friendly. HUMANS WERE NOT DESIGNED (internally & mentally) TO EAT THIS 'killed by others' STUFF.
it took me 18 years to get this FACT, but I did do so!
      • Randy 4 mths ago
Wrong, Joel. When I knocked carbs out of my diet (I ate bacon and eggs almost every day) my cholesterol went DOWN 30 points. When your insulin level goes up, the body produces extra cholesterol
      • Lisa Grace Books 4 mths ago
You're correct. I know people who are vegans and have high choleterol. It is produced by the human body and high cholestorol can be hereditary. I'm glad a couple of people here had theirs go down, but it's not a guarantee for everybody to have the same results.

Why are some meat eaters so defensive? Why can't they have a live and let live attitude. None of the vegans that I know have ever said anything unpleasant about meat eaters. Yet I have heard plenty of sarcasm or derogatory comments from meat eaters toward people who do not share their food preferences. Unfortunately, science is supporting that we must eat more fruit and vegetables not more meat to promote better health. The final choice is in our hands. Chronic diseases are not fun yet science is showing that most of them are preventable and some even reversible if we adopt a pretty strict vegetarian diet. So why get all twisted about what others eat? What bothers me is having to pay those hefty health insurance premiums because a large amount of the population makes unhealthy choices.

"What bothers me is having to pay those hefty health insurance premiums because a large amount of the population makes unhealthy choices." That's one reason why we get offended by you vegan's. The other is folk's like PETA who would like to take away our right to eat meat.

I sell meat at a farmers market that my family raises humanely and sustainably. I get looked down on and spoke abusively to every weekend by "VEGANS"
    • Let_Us_Reason_Together  •  4 mths ago
The article left out two of the greatest benefits of a vegan diet: having a great crap every morning and one or two more throughout the day. If you don't think that puts a song on your lips, try it sometime.

Which leads to the second great benefit: terrific lovemaking because your body isn't giving off toxins from the meat rotting in your gut. So your breath's sweet, your body smells wonderful and the human body becomes pure pleasure without a single turn-off odor.

Great craps and great sex--who can doubt that's what God intended for us? Go vegan!
      • Rick 4 mths ago
Yes, I can doubt it, because I doubt he intended us to eat shlt to get B12, #$%$

I would like to know who their study group was. Here in the SF Bay Area I know quite a few vegan women that are obese. It doesn't matter what you eat - you still need to eat only the amount of calories your body actually needs for your daily activities. And while vegan desserts made with nut meals and nut milks are tasty.. they are very calorie dense.

The main causes of these disease symptoms are our addiction to fast food and pretty much all of the other processed food products being sold every day that define the modern diet here in our society. This includes all of the pesticides, antibiotics, chemicals and preservatives that have been entering our food chain for the last several decades.
Almost all of the meat being consumed here has been processed. If natural grass-fed beef, for example, were to become a staple of our diet instead of the commercial stuff, I feel that the effects on our metabolsim would be more beneficial than not.
Besides, if man were meant to be strictly a herbivore, he wouldn't have sharp canines and incisors--he would never have survived the evolutionary process.

There are some things that make life worth living, and a cress sandwich with soy dressing ain't one of them.
    • dadawg  •  5 mths ago
What they're not mentioning is that other than getting what they say are "nutrients" etc. from MEAT and MEAT products, You're also getting secondary Harmone shots, Steroids, Ant-Biotics & in some food supply (meat products) now even Estrogen. You can shove your meat products up your arse!!!!!! Doesn't at all sound healthy to me now does it?

50% of all raw meat is infected with antibiotic resistant superbugs MRSA, VRE and other antibiotic resistant microbes highly contagious just by touching them due to routine antibiotic abuse to keep animals alive in the filthiest conditions, and many of these animals are also genetically modified. All red meat is gassed with carbon monoxide to keep it looking "fresh". All chicken is fed arsenic to make the meat pinkish and if you think cows are clean, they are fed chicken manure as a standard feed. Many of your "anti-soy" campaigns are led by the meat industry to spread lies and propaganda. Okinawa, Japan is the longest lived people on earth and their MAIN STAPLE happens to be soy. And I also read in a Medical Journal that soy actually PREVENTS breast cancer and its occurrence.

Funny how a lot of vegan products that resemble dairy can have a lot of crazy additives and/or treatment processes to make them "taste" like cheese. Which is worse, overprocessing, or animal products???
