Maintenance man arrested in Ga. girl's slaying

CANTON, Ga. (AP) — A 20-year-old maintenance man with no known criminal past was arrested Wednesday in the beating death of a 7-year-old north Georgia girl who was abducted at the apartment complex where she lived and he worked and her body left in a trash bin.

Ryan Brunn, who also lived at complex and had no known criminal record, was jailed on a murder warrant, said Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan.

Jorelys Rivera was last seen Friday evening leaving the playground to walk back home to get drinks for her friends. Authorities said they believe she was taken to an empty apartment, where she was sexually assaulted, stabbed and beaten to death. Her body was found Monday.

Brunn had keys to the empty apartment and the trash compactor bin where Rivera's body was left, Keenan said.

"We are confident that Brunn is the killer and that is why he is in custody," Keenan said, declining to detail what evidence investigators have against him.

According to a warrant obtained by The Associated Press, Brunn was arrested on suspicion of murder and making false statements to authorities. The warrant said he "did unlawfully and with malice aforethought cause the death of Jorelys Rivera by hitting her on the head with a blunt object." No other details are contained in the document.

In an interview with Atlanta's WSB-TV, Jorelys' mother, Jocelyn Rivera, said through a translator that Brunn "is an animal" who "killed my little angel." She said she wants Brunn to be sentenced to the death penalty if he is convicted.

Blue Ridge District Attorney Garry Moss said he had not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty.

Steven Brunn said his younger brother is not violent and says he doesn't believe he was involved in the slaying. The 26-year-old told The Associated Press that "the real person may still be out there" plotting another attack.

"I don't know where this all is coming from," Steven Brunn said. "They said it's innocent until proven guilty, but they already done proved him guilty."

It was not immediately clear whether Brunn had an attorney. He was being held at the Cherokee County jail. Lt. Jay Baker with the Sheriff's Office said Brunn's initial appearance in Superior Court was set for Thursday.

Brunn, wearing a blue hooded sweat shirt and jeans, was arrested at the complex and taken in handcuffs to a sheriff's patrol car surrounded by a handful of armed officers. Video aired by WSB showed Brunn keeping his head down and ignoring comments shouted by an observer.

Keenan said investigators focused on Brunn after being tipped off and had been watching him since Tuesday night. Keenan said the investigation will continue for several months.

"This is a mammoth case," Keenan said at a news conference in Canton. "We believe that this horrendous crime was planned and calculated, and we've recovered a lot of evidence."

About 65 local, state and federal investigators worked the case and conducted several hundred interviews.

"Our goal was to make an arrest for what has happened to this sweet, innocent little girl," Canton Police Chief Jeff Lance said.

When Rivera's body was found, it shook the community where neighbors say they all knew each other and a makeshift memorial took root at the playground.

Investigators said valuable evidence had come from apartment residents.

Steven Brunn, a tattoo artist, said his brother "is great with kids" and has no criminal record. He said he last saw his younger brother two months ago. The family is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., he said, adding that Ryan Brunn and his siblings moved to Georgia with his mother several years ago.

His mother, Karen-Ann Whiteley, filed for bankruptcy last month, according to court records. She lives in Dahlonega, about 50 miles northeast of Canton.

Steven Brunn lives in Dahlonega, where Ryan Brunn lived until a month ago when he moved to Canton to take the maintenance job. Ryan Brunn also previously lived in Dumfries, Va. No one answered a knock on the door of a relative's home there Wednesday.

In July, when Florida resident Casey Anthony was acquitted on charges she killed her daughter, Ryan Brunn wrote on Facebook that Anthony will "get hers." His Facebook page has since been disabled.

Nancy Hudgins, 57, who lives near the trash bin where Jorelys body was found, said she talked with Brunn on Monday as police searched apartments. She said he told her he was nervous about allowing officers into his apartment because he had beer bottles and is not of legal drinking age.

"He was just kind of scared about them going in," she said.

She said neighbors were relieved that a suspect has been arrested.

"We're still kind of hurt real bad about this girl," Hudgins said. "We're really glad they did get the guy."

Another neighbor, Bernadette Merrill, 58, said she was particularly distressed that Jorelys had been found in a trash bin.

"When it first happened, I didn't get any sleep," she said. "I just don't see a child being thrown away like that."

She said children often play unaccompanied in the complex, and when the school bus pulls up outside the gate, most children would get off and walk home unaccompanied. The killing changed that.

"Monday, every child had a hand," Merrill said.

River Ridge Management Co., which runs the apartment complex, said all employees and residents must pass background checks before being hired or moving in. The company said Brunn cleared those checks.

Nowhere near enough information here for me to even take a guess as to whether this guy is really guilty or not. No criminal record whatsoever? Sketchy, to say the least. I'll wait to hear what kinds of evidence the police feel they have before making judgment.

right----innocent people have been convicted before----no criminal record and no history of assaulting little girls----better be #$%$ good evidence.....
      • Zoe 5 mths ago
Yes, what is the evidence? I agree with a previous comment that typically someone like this would have a previous record.

justice is so fickle its portrayed as a woman.i hope she gets it right and this evil dimwitted creature is Hanged.

The biggest problem with the death penalty for animals like this is that it isn't carried out nearly soon enough. If his DNA is on that child, he should be put down at high noon the day after his trial, and guilty verdict. Of what possible use is someone like that? That having been said, the court's position is that someone is innocent until proven guilty. We are not the courts and can offer an opinion here without that restriction!

I say put HIM in the trash compactor and push the big green button.
      • Spring 5 mths ago
What trial? Put a bullet (or several) in him as soon as the DNA results prove it was him.

if he's guilty he deserves jailhouse justice..someone will kill him within weeks of entering prison if he's put into the main line

If he makes it out of county jail and reach prison, he will live in isolation.
He is only in danger in county jail.

Background checks miss the fact that every human being is capable of crime and you never know how far a person can go if given the opportunity, regardless of race, religion and nationality!
      • A Yahoo! User 5 mths ago
You're always going to miss the ones who have yet to commit a crime, or haven't been caught for the ones they have committed. Background checks are just a tool, In the case of pedophiles, they virtually always offend again. The checks only help lower the odds by keeping the known criminals out of your area.
      • Gregory 5 mths ago
There are more criminals that have not be caught then those caught. This commnetor is absolutely correct. They give you a false sense of safety. I also love how everyone knows the person was completely non-violent. No one is. He may have been hiding it or finally got the nerve to act. there is always a first time. I also agree he is innocent until proven guilt but it does sound like they got the goods!

Virtually always REOFFEND ! Many of us including you Virtually always Lie about things we know very little about. The registry does not keep known crimnals out of an area, a registered offender could easily visit your neighborhood, play on the playground and you still would not know. Don't count on some
registry to do anything but crucify former offenders, the majority who will not reOffend.

Come on, people. It does not matter one iota what ethnicity either the victim, the victim's family, or even the perpetrator is. The simple fact is, NO ONE should have to go through being attacked and murdered in such a fashion or the family have to go through the trauma. We're all human beings. This happened less than 3 miles from me, and the crime has shaken our city drastically. Things like this just don't happen here. My sincere condolences to Jorelys' family, and I'm glad they've arrested the man responsible.

We are all human beings...really? What kind of monster would do this? If found guilty....this piece of crap should be executed immediatly.....we don't need lenghthy appeals, etc...all we need is a blindfold and a firing squad.
      • maddog 5 mths ago
Yes it does matter. It mattters because whites play the race crime card. As soon as it is a crime that white males are mainly responsilbe for, then we heard "what does his race have to do with it."

What the hell does his mother filing for bankruptcy have to do with anything in this story? Are we supposed to be less surprised by his actions because his mother declared bankruptcy? I guess the journalist just needed a couple more lines to throw in to make the assigned number of words.

I agree that this is a terrible tragedy and I truly hope the killer of this innocent sweet child is given proper sentence. I am not sure if this guy is the killer, there is a chance he could be, they definitely need to get more evidence before they convict him of anything. As far as arresting him goes, it makes sense to question him as a suspect since he does have the access to the apartments and trash. It doesn't mean he is necessarily the killer, but he would definitely be a suspect. It's better to find out whether he is or isn't then to just wonder what if. Think about it, if this was your child that this happend to, you would definitely want any suspicious people to be questioned, I know I would.

Only this guy had a key to the apartment and trash bin. Calculated and ploted. Did someone steel his keys? Yeah right! They have more evidence, i hope this guy gets the death penalty cause if i was the father, i would beat him to death myself if he's released.

......and what does the language she speaks have to do with anything? Your sense of reasoning is not unlike that of this little girls killer. A 7 year old is dead, thrown in a dumpster. This is so wrong on every level of comprehension, yet you focus on the ethnicity of the mother of the child. Your dispicable.

At this point, NO ONE has been proven guilty, so don't call out the executionor's yet, folks.....
    • paleface  •  5 mths ago
sad story dont know whats wrong with people today.just terrible.at least they got the guy.maybe the little girls family will get justice.

If its true that 73 sexual offenders were living in the area (and some of them in the apt bldg), why on earth weren't the residents informed of this?
I mean, then maybe at least a couple parents would have decided its too risky to let their children wander around alone.
    • Eldo Rado  •  Springfield, United States  •  5 mths ago
I hope the FBI is checking background on this guy, I doubt that this was his first act of sexual violence against children. I believe the prosecutor has an obligation to the people of his community to seek the death penalty for this deviate, not for vengance, but because i dont know any other way to absolutely guarantee that he will never do this again...

If this man is guilty and convicted----he deserves nothing less than the DEATH PENALTY for this terrible deed. My prayers are with the mother of this sweet lil angel who was so mercifully killed and then tossed in a trash bin like she was garbage.
      RIP LIL ANGEL!!!!
    • A Yahoo! User  •  Kokomo, United States  •  5 mths ago
not sure if guy this killed her or not things don,t add up yet who knows time will tell if he did it he needs to die if not then there still a killer loose .
    • I Love Everybody  •  5 mths ago
There were several registered former sex offenders living in the apartment and not one was guilty of this crime? I guess the 1000 foot invisible wall did absolutely nothing to stop the new offenders who we trust simply because they are not on some list. Wake up America, Do not think some registry is gonna make your children any safer. Some 95% of new offenses will be committed by someone not on the registry..

What's all this controversy about? The victim was sexually assaulted so there would be the assailant's DNA in her; just see if it matches the DNA of the accused and if it does it's case resolved.

If he's found guilty, immediate extermination! There's no need for him to breathe our air.
    • adarc  •  5 mths ago
I wish my neighbors would read this, they let their kids as young as two run all over our apartment building totally unsupervised. Sadly, it will probably take one of them getting kidnapped or killed for them to stop. Just because you did something in the old country doesn't mean it is safe to do here in the USA.

The most unfortunate part is that no matter what punishment we all dream up for this baby killer.. No matter what justice the family gets, It can never be enough, It will never heal that mothers pain of living the rest of her life without her baby girl! I couldn't imagine her pain!
