    How the major stock indexes fared on Monday

    Stocks rose on Monday after a strong gain in retail spending suggested that consumers could be getting more confident about the economy. Bank stocks rose broadly after Citigroup delivered a strong earnings report. Big drugmakers also rose.

    The Dow Jones industrial average rose 95.38 points, or 0.7 percent, to close at 13,424.23.

    The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 11.54 points, or 0.8 percent, to close at 1,440.13.

    The Nasdaq composite index rose 20.07 points, or 0.7 percent, to close at 3,064.18.

    For the year so far:

    The Dow is up 1,206.67 points, or 9.9 percent.

    The S&P 500 is up 182.53 points, or 14.5 percent.

    The Nasdaq is up 459.03 points, or 17.6 percent.
