Maldives museum reopens minus smashed Hindu images

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) โ€” The Maldives' national museum reopened Tuesday without some of its most valuable exhibits a week after a mob of suspected religious extremists smashed images from the pre-Islamic era of this Indian Ocean archipelago.

About 35 exhibits โ€” mostly images of Buddha and Hindu gods โ€” were destroyed in the attack. Some of the artifacts dated back to the sixth century, museum director Ali Waheed said.

Waheed says 99 percent of the Maldives' pre-Islamic artifacts from before the 12th century, when most inhabitants were Buddhists or Hindus, were destroyed.

"Some of the pieces can be put together but mostly they are made of sandstone, coral and limestone, and they are reduced to powder," he said.

The mob of suspected Muslim extremists attacked the museum during the Maldives' unfolding political crisis. The country has seen weeks of protests and last week President Mohamed Nasheed stepped down. He later said he was forced to resign at gunpoint.

The attack was the latest blow to the island nation that is best known as a high-end tourist destination.

"We are very sad. This is the physical and archaeological evidence of the country, we have nothing to show (of the pre-Islamic history)," Waheed said.

The items had been preserved since the museum opened in 1952. Waheed said the the attackers did not understand that the museum exhibits were not promoting other religions in this Muslim country.

Practicing or preaching any religion other than Islam is prohibited by the Maldives constitution, and there have been increasing demands for conservative Muslim policies to be implemented.

Last year, a mob destroyed a monument given by Pakistan marking a South Asian summit with an engraved image of the Buddha in it. Pakistan is an Islamic republic that also has a Buddhist history.

There have been strong objections to former president Nasheed's ties with Israel and selling alcohol outside tourist resorts.

But Maldives' new President Mohammed Waheed Hassan rejected claims of rising Muslim extremism in the country.

"I don't tolerate it and it is not acceptable at all," he told reporters last week after the museum attack. "I can assure you there is no extremist violent action in this country."

Police spokesman Ahmed Shyam said investigations are ongoing into the museum attack, but no one has been arrested.

I hope their tourism industry shuts down....then maybe the entire country will realize how destructive their mentality is.

Don't lump everybody together there. There's an extremist faction but by and large the people in the Maldives are laid back and peaceful. It's the extremists that are ruining the country for everyone.

The silence of the laid back and peaceful majority is deafening.

They have to destroy every aspect of their pre-Islamic heritage, lest reminders of a glorious non-Muslim past raise questions about their miserable Muslim present.

We saw that in Afghanistan (destruction of Bamiyan Buddhas); we're seeing it now in the Maldives, and we will see in later in....

        Well said,
The ironic thing is that if one man in Florida burns one koran they go on a rampage and destroy their own cities in the muslim world.

Please recall that Bamiyan was destroyed by the US funded Mujahedin

They are much wealthier now than they have ever been, so I am not sure what you mean by "miserable" present.

Islam's legendary intolerance strikes again. Utterly appallingly ignorant.

Just like the destruction of Bamian Buddha in Afghanistan. If Buddhist and Hindus respond like muslims responded to accidental destruction of Koran copies (which can easily be replaced) in Afghanistan, there will be lot of violence in Maldives.

      Intolerant Muslims again.
Yet when the backlash reaches Muslims and Mosques relaxing in their comfortable western enclaves they will cry and whine discrimination.... Never will any Muslim religious leader condemn such atrocities = secret support by the Muslim chameleons amongst us.

Sad that the lovely peaceful people of the Maldives are being ruined by some extremist a$$hats. Some of the nicest people I have met. Hopefully they have the strength to reject these extremists.

the doctrine is clear in its statements and you are a liar.

No, FreeRadical, I've been to the Maldives. I've lived in Muslim countries (and I am not a religious person). There's extremists but by and large people are good, thoughtful, peaceful people just like most places. It's the outliers that make things bad.

Try stepping outside your front door and meeting some people from around the globe. You might be surprised what you learn.

Muslims are at war with civilization. They have nothing to do with religion. They only want to kill and destroy.
      • UWFShooter 3 mths ago
It has to do with religion, notice they targeted the Hindu idols. Even though their own god is a moon god.

When the Maldives Islands which are only a few feet above sea level start going under water a few decades from now as expected due to global warming hopefully their nearest neighbors Hindu India and Buddhist Sri Lanka will remember the intolerance of these people and not give these bigots any refuge.

I hope they go down soon. The whole lot of them.

This was carried out by a bunch of hoodlum, not the "Maldives people". The people of the Maldives are friendly, peacefull and great allies to the USA. Be careful what you wish for.

Given the opportunity, they would have done the same thing to the pyramids and ancient artifacts in Egypt as well. What a bunch of uneducated, ignorant fools.

Religious people in general are a problem. The unwillingness of countries with substantial islamic population to prosecute with extreme prejudice muslims who are out of control is a scandal beyond average.

Keep it up, Maldives. All you have going for you is tourism, and once that dries up, you're screwed.

It may seem that Muslims tend to destroy cultural artifacts of anything not Arab or Islamic. Imaging the vast antiquities that are no longer. Not just Jewish but Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, Roman, Persian, Greek, and other native cultures to the Conquered Lands that are now Islamic.

This is very sad. Those who did this are not the Maldives people that I know. I suspect this was caused by a bunch of hooligans, making a vicious and self-destructive political statement. Just as bad as most of the awful commenters here who make vicious statements without any knowledge.
