Pio, Brazil – Football fans in Northern Brazil stormed the field after a referee fatally stabbed a player, severing the head of the referee and mounting it on a stake in the middle of the field. According to media reports the incident took place on 30 June in a remote town in Northern Brazil.

Police have so far arrested one man.

30 year old footballer Josenir dos Santos refused to leave the field after the referee, Octavio da Silva ordered him off.

Da Silva allegedly then pulled out a knife and stabbed dos Santos. According to reports Dos Santos died on the way to hospital.

In response to the stabbing supporters poured onto the field and began stoning and attacking Da Silva. The spectators then severed the referee’s head from his body and mounted it in the sports field.

Police spokesperson Valter Costa was quoted as saying “We will identify and hold accountable all those involved in this incident. One crime will never justify another.”

Brazil is hosting the 2014 FIFA Soccer World Cup and is facing pressure to prove the country is a safe place for tourists. Brazil has recently been rocked by anti-government protests which took place across the country.
