Man Bites Car, Bath Salts to Blame?

A Florida man showing signs of being under the influence of bath salts bit the hood of a police cruiser, scraping off the paint and causing nearly $600 in damage while officers attempted to restrain him, local police allege.

According to police reports, 47-year-old Eric Scott of Milton, Fla., had been knocking on neighbors' doors and asking them to call 911, saying he needed medical assistance. When officers from the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's office arrived, Scott allegedly began to walk away from them while cursing to himself, before throwing his flash light at a nearby mailbox and screaming "over and over" at the officers to shoot him.

He already had several self inflicted injuries to his hands and blood coming from his nose, police Sgt. Scott Haines told ABC News.

Police allege that as they waited for emergency responders to arrive, Scott, then detained in handcuffs, began to scrape his teeth across the hood of their patrol car, digging through the paint down to the metal. Scott was transported to a local hospital, where he continued to ask police and hospital workers to kill him. Scott was released from the hospital but could still face charges of criminal mischief and resisting an officer without violence.

Scott displayed numerous symptoms of using bath salts including "erratic behavior, confusion, loss of direction, and aggression towards law enforcement," according to police reports.

"We unfortunately have to deal with [suspects on bath salts] pretty frequently and all of his actions were consistent with someone who was on that," Haines told ABC News.

WATCH: '20/20' Investigation: Bath Salts, a Deadly, Legal High?

A woman who answered the phone at Scott's residence -- and who could be overheard passing along questions to someone else in the room -- told ABC News Scott claimed he was not on bath salts.

"Just beer and vodka," she said.

DEA Announces Emergency Ban on 'Bath Salts'

Last June, an investigation that aired on ABC News "20/20" revealed the dangers of the then-legal bath salts, which have been linked to violent, sometimes deadly outbursts by users.

"They're selling time bombs," Louisiana Poison Control Center Director Dr. Mark Ryan told ABC News during the investigation. "We've had some people show up who are complaining of chest pains so severe that they think they're having a heart attack. They think they're dying... They have extreme paranoia. They're having hallucinations. They see things, they hear things, monsters, demons, aliens."

The synthetic drug, which has since been placed under an emergency ban by the DEA while a bill to permanently ban it awaits a vote by the Senate, has been linked to a number of bizarre episodes over the past year, including a New Orleans woman's arm being devoured by a flesh-eating disease in January and a West Virginia man dressed in women's underwear slaying a goat last May.

Seriously. Isn't it a little obvious (big pharma/alcohol lobby?) why we "can't" find a medical solution to addiction?

How many people are driving with legal prescription drugs that clearly states if taken do not drive?Or for that matter a person driving with a dogs arse in his face sitting in his lap ?I live in a senior only community an most drive and are on two or three of these kind of legal drugs and a lot are in their 80s. Unfortunately they feel they are entitled so I cant comment to much on the younger generation since they are so creative. A Little sarcasm in that last remark.

"resisting an officer without violence" Politicians =resisting the will of the voters without violence; now that should be a crime.
      • Just Me, Richard 3 mths ago
Those "symptoms" also apply to alcohol. "Resisting an office without violence" is a stupid charge; why not "looking funny at an officer" or "public ugliness?"

I am a physcian assistant and recently admitted a young man to the ICU after he took Molly Mosquito Caps, which has mephedrone in it- that is also in Bath Salts. This pt is slowly dying of renal failure and cardiogenic shock secondary to mephedrone toxicity. THIS STUFF IS DANGEROUS AND DEADLY!!! He only took this once (verified by toxicology), and a few other cases have been reported (ahead of publication).

In general, if the label states NOT INTENDED FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION please do not take it!!! I don't care what your friends or anyone at the head shop says.

What? Bath salts? The article is written like this is a common known thing! They didnt say PSP or Angel Dust, they said BATH SALTS people. #$%$ is really going on? I have a 14 year old at home and now I gotta stress on more than weed, alcohol, etc. Now I have to worry about bath salts? I would provide him weed if I knew that is all he would EVER do!!! Compared to this #$%$ Wow.

"...and a West Virginia man dressed in women's underwear slaying a goat last May."
That goat was cheating on him. It was a crime of passion, not bath salts. This is typical in West Virginia.

If only he had some weed to smoke instead. Then this crisis would have been averted and certainly no automobiles would have been harmed.

Title should read "Is war on drugs working?" We have spent billions of dollars on drugs during most of my life time and they have done nothing except give policemen overtime, lawyers money and justify judges jobs. I am not a user but all this needs to change like alcohol laws had changed. Wonder why we don't have money.....

I am an ICU nurse and have recently seen several people admitted to our unit who were high on either bath salts and/or K2. These legal synthetic drugs are much worse than their illegal counterpart. I have seen a patient die a slow horrible death post toking some K2. I have never seen anyone die or be admitted to an ICU unit for being to high on weed. Bath salts just as bad. However, I have seen similar outcomes with cocaine. In both instances, there is usually an underlying medical condition that the pt. may or may not know about. With Bath Salts some recover after several days of hallucinating, not sleeping (until medically inducing a coma), being incontinent of both bowel and bladder (so they get a foley catheter, and depending on the consistency of their bowel movements a rectal tube) having seizures, and those are the lucky ones. The not so fortunate ones end up in MODS (Multi Organ Dsyfunction Syndrome). Basically in MODS a person's organs shut down one by one. Once three organ systems shut down their chance of survival is about 25-40% and once 4 organs shut down survial rates drop to about 1%.
I have worked the last 4 nights in a row and have been awake for way to long. So sorry if my grammer is a little off right now.
I just thought people should know that those of us working in Intensive Care Units have seen a major spike in this type of patient admit over the past couple of years. It really is no joke.
BTW if you ever saw some go through ETOH withdrawal (alcohol) it is not a pretty sight either.
Once again, I have never had a single patient be admitted to the ICU because he/she was high on weed. Just saying.

treated and released from the hospital....this guy should have been admitted under an involuntary status and treated for his addiction/ mental illness before he does kill himself or worse, someone else.
