Man charged following robbery of two Wilmington businesses

A Wilmington man is in police custody following the robbery of two Wilmington businesses.

On Tuesday at approximately 2:30 a.m., Wilmington police responded to a gas station at 901 S. 3rd St. for report of an armed robbery, according to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department. Investigations revealed that the suspect had entered the store and approached the clerk, implying he has a gun in his pocket. The suspect took cigarettes and cash before fleeing the store on a bike.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. that same day, a person matching the same description of the suspect entered the Easy Vape and Tobacco store at 1929 Oleander Drive, according to the release. The suspect forced employees into a back room, implying he had a gun, before fleeing from the store with merchandise and money.

Video footage aided investigators and patrol officers in identifying the suspect as Steven Lavern Nixon, 42, of Wilmington.

On Tuesday evening, the Mobile Field Force, consisting of WPD officers and New Hanover County Sheriff's Office deputies, located Nixon in the passenger seat of a vehicle. Nixon was taken into custody following a traffic stop.

Nixon faces charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon, first degree kidnapping, felony larceny, and resist/delay/obstruct public officers. He was being held at the New Hanover County Jail as of Wednesday under no bond.
