BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore police say a collision on an elevated highway threw a man standing by an idled vehicle over the expressway.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi (goog-lee-EL-mee) says a man had a single-vehicle accident about 6:15 p.m. Friday on the Jones Falls Expressway near the Pepsi plant. Guglielmi says the man and a police officer were standing by the disabled vehicle, and a tow truck had also arrived at the scene.
Guglielmi says an SUV hit the group of stopped vehicles, sending the man over the highway wall.
The Baltimore Sun reports that the man landed on a grassy island in the Jones Falls below, where he was rescued by firefighters despite the storm-swollen stream.
The officer was also hit, but stayed on the highway.
Both men were taken to Maryland Shock Trauma. Their conditions were not immediately known.
A similar accident happened near the same spot in 2011, when a police officer was hit and thrown over a wall.
