Man injured in shooting during argument outside DeLand bar

A man was shot in the leg early Thursday during an argument outside a bar in downtown DeLand, officials said.

City of DeLand spokesman Chris Graham said that a verbal altercation occurred between two people at 2 a.m. outside Issues Bar at 114 E. Indiana Ave.

Police spokeswoman Vicki Karr said the suspected shooter, Joshua Jones, 35, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful discharge of a firearm in connection with the early morning shooting of Curtis Criche, 52.

A preliminary investigation revealed Jones and Criche had been drinking at the local bar when a verbal argument carried over into the parking lot and roadway, Karr said.

Jones, who was in a black SUV, pulled out a gun and fired it toward Criche. The victim was standing outside of the SUV on East Indiana Avenue, and the bullet appeared to ricochet off the ground, with fragments hitting Criche, Karr said.

Criche suffered non-life threatening injuries to his lower legs and was taken to the hospital in stable condition, she said.

Investigators said Jones then drove east on Indiana Avenue, firing about nine more rounds. Jones briefly left the scene, circling back to the area where witnesses pointed him out to responding officers. Units conducted a felony stop, taking him into custody, Karr said.

The shooting remains under investigation.
