Man opens fire outside US Embassy in Bosnia

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) — A man opened fire with an automatic weapon outside the U.S. Embassy in Bosnia on Friday, and authorities said he was targeting the building in a terrorist attack.

The man injured at least one police officer guarding the embassy before police surrounded him. After a 30-minute standoff, the sound of a single shot echoed and AP Video showed the shooter — brandishing a Kalyshinkov on a street corner outside of the embassy — slump to the ground.

Police arrested the wounded man and took him away in an ambulance as pedestrians watched from behind buildings and vehicles. Sarajevo police spokesman Irfan Nefic said the man was being treated at a hospital.

Hospital spokeswoman Biljana Jandric told The Associated Press the gunman's leg was slightly injured and he will remain in hospital overnight before being released into police custody.

Sarajevo mayor Alija Behmen said the man had "got off a tram with a Kalashnikov and started shooting at the American embassy."

Witnesses told Bosnian TV the man was urging pedestrians to move away because he did not want to hurt them as his target was the embassy

The U.S. Embassy said in a statement that none of its employees was injured. Ambassador Patrick Moon expressed his gratitude for the swift response by the police.

Bakir Izetbegovic, one of Bosnia's three presidents, issued a statement condemning "the terrorist attack on the embassy of the United States in Bosnia-Herzegovina."

"The United States is a proven friend of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Its government and its people supported us in the most difficult moments in our history and nobody has the right to jeopardize our relations," he said.

Zeljko Komisci, chairman of Bosnia's presidency, said in a video interview with Associated Press that the country will now have to wait to hear if the security services determine if the attack "was the act of an individual, or something organized."

"But whatever it was, it is not just an attack at the U.S. embassy or the U.S., it is also an attack on Bosnia and Herzegovina," he added.

He said in a later statement that Bosnia "is not a terrorist refuge and neither does our country nor its citizens support anything that jeopardizes peace, security or anyone's life."

He added that according to initial information, the attacker was a foreign citizen previously known to police.

Bosnian Muslims are sensitive about their relations with the U.S. because it was the driving force behind the NATO military intervention and brokered a peace agreement that ended the 1992-95 war.

The gunman was bearded and dressed in an outfit typical for followers of the conservative Wahabi branch of Islam.

Bosnian TV identified the shooter as Mevlid Jasarevic, from Novi Pazar, Serbia. It said he is a Wahabi follower, but did not cite its sources.

The Wahabis are an extremely conservative branch of Islam which is rooted in Saudi Arabia and linked to religious militants in parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Plus this guy was Serbian from Novi Pazar and Serbians were the reason NATO moved in to stop Milosovik from ethnic cleansing all the Bosnians. These people are continual trouble makers.
      • Radu 7 mths ago
Clara your ignorance is astounding...Serbians are Orthodox Christians, the Bosnians are muslim. They were having a civil war and NATO just decided to join in and help the Bosnian muslims, just like they decided to help the Kosovo muslims...and you can see what we get in return. A Kosovo man assassinated US troops in Frankfurt, Germany. A muslim shoots at the US embassy in Bosnia...who knows what's gonna come out of Libya in the near future?

Note the article said... "ROOTED IN SAUDI ARABIA"! Once again... "our ally" seems to produce more terrorists than the countries we blame.

Would you rather: 1. Be shot in the leg and later interrogated by Bosnian Police, or 2. Be shot in the head by a Bosnian Police Sniper and die a hero for your cause? I think it's safe to say that Mr. Jasarevic is in for a rough couple of days.
      • shiloh2020 7 mths ago
I agree...now after the interrogation maybe he will supply info on the rest of their den...Since Wahabists/Jihadists are mostly animals I think it is fair to say they live in dens and operate in packs.....

the same corrupt bosnian muslim police that released him after arresting him in 2009 for getting close to US ambassador in Bosnia with a knife in his hands?!

Note the moral clarity of the Bosnian Muslim president, when he called it ""the terrorist attack." He didn't use PC euphemisms like "militant attack," "attack by an extremist," or such other terminology.
      • shiloh2020 7 mths ago
The 'gunman' is a Wahabi militant; he is an Islamic Jihadist; (Or so they say) so it does not necessarily mean that it is PC to say he staged a militant attack or that he is not an extremist. Islam is a bogus theology, for sure, in my mind and that of most others (except for the followers of Islam) and the idea is that Islam will take over the world, by guile or by violence. The 'extremism' is the 'violence' but the threat of Islam is Islam itself. When 'chrisitans' have finally had enough and they finally see that their very existence is at stake you will see an explosion of violence from them as well, but the difference is that now-a-days christianity does not pose threats to life liberty and pursuit of happiness that Islam and the advent of shariah law brings. The problems that most people have with christianity can be handled generally through the courts. when christian extremism takes hold is when you will see violence like this. I am speaking of the United states, whereas in the Balkans there has always been extremism from both sides, muslim and christian....but I am a christian myself, not a secularist. The only obstacle to Islam is christianity. If you look at Europe you will see that over time the inhabitants there have become secular; abandoning the Bible; as a result the Islamization of their nations has come on very strong. And their women have paid a high price for this. The men are afraid because the Islamists are violent and hide themselves well, whereas most secularists are of a 'christian' background, having come from usually peaceful people and do not hide themselves very well. Personally I will be very glad to see the christian rise up but this can not happen until the christian becomes educated in the political philosophy of the Founding Fathers. A good source to begin with is this new material from a man named David Barton entitled "Building upon the American Heritage"...a video series.Good luck . Keep the faith.

What gratitude! As I recall it wasn't that long ago that the US Military and NATO went to war with the Serbs to SAVE Muslims from the slaughter that was taking place! Now, do I always agree with our foreign policy no but, I see that more US Military troops are heading back to Kosovo to protect the people of that region. I say if we’re not wanted there then we should leave and let them fend for themselves!

Since I'm probably the only Bosnian on here, I'll shed some light on this.

This idiot is one of the few Wahabists in the country, an extreme religious CULT that's unpopular and rare. He doesn't reflect the majority view of Bosnians. Bosnians are very pro-American and have accepted many parts of American culture.

We are not a nation that takes this lightly. There will be consequences.

Something about this seems out of place. The man had a fully-automatic AK and he was surrounded by ARMED police for 30 minutes without being shot at or killed? Then, when a well-trained sniper fires at him, he is only wounded. I don't know, but it just seems like they took extra steps to NOT kill him.

      SOME CALL IT PEACE
Waiting For War In The Balkans
The Islamicization and radicalization of Bosnia-Herzegovina, including the consolidation of an Islamist terrorist infrastructure specifically aimed at I-FOR (NATO). The main objective of this process is to ensure the Islamic character of Bosnia and further the evolution of a global Islamist jihad. In order to implement this program, the Izetbegovic administration in Sarajevo relies heavily on the continued presence of well over 10,000 foreign mujahedin as well as tens of thousands of Bosnian Muslims turned militant Islamists as the most loyal hard core of the armed forces, intelligence and security organs. Considering this distinct character of the Bosnian Muslim defense establishment, it will be impossible for any leader in Sarajevo to disengage from dependency on the Islamists even if this leader really wants to.

I am surprised where are the moderate muslims condemning these acts , why dont they start a movement and make sure their own religion is not blamed ...if they are really peace loving people they should stand up against these killings...... but they are keeping quite WHY?
I guess they are want these jihadi to succeed and by taking no action they support these groups
