Man rescued from boat caught on fire near Keehi Boat Harbor
Jul. 3—A man was rescued from a boat near Keehi Boat Harbor Friday afternoon after it caught on fire.
Honolulu Fire Department officials said they received a call around 1 :47 p.m. about a boat, about 400 yards from the harbor and near Slipper Island, that caught on fire.
Arriving at around 1 :54 p.m., firefighters found the 20-foot boat "fully involved " in fire. The fire took place within state jurisdiction, so the Department of Transportation's Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting, or ARFF, responded with its rescue Boat 1 to fight the fire, which was extinguished at 2 :12 p.m.
HFD reported that a 32-year-old local man, who owned the boat, was the only person onboard during the fire. Honolulu Ocean Safety retrieved the man via a jet ski and brought him to shore. He was not injured and refused medical treatment.
HFD called off its remaining units at the scene. Air 1 searched and found no oil leak from the boat.
