Many report illness at Wash. cheerleading event

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Washington state health officials said Tuesday they are investigating reports of intestinal illness affecting at least 19 squads that participated in a weekend state cheerleading tournament in Everett.

Reported symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea, state Health Department spokesman Donn Moyer said.

KOMO-TV reported that several people have been hospitalized but their conditions were unknown. Moyer said he had not heard of any hospitalizations "but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened."

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association hosted Saturday's competition at Comcast Arena. More than 3,000 people attended and more than 1,000 people in 52 squads competed in cheerleading, dance and drill events, the association said.

The first symptoms developed Sunday and Monday, the Health Department said.

State health officials were working with the Snohomish Health District and the athletics association to determine the cause of the illnesses, Moyer said. Surveys were being sent to participants and samples were being collected for testing.

Intestinal illnesses can be caused by several viruses and bacteria that may come from a variety of sources, the Health Department said. Anyone with severe symptoms should see a health care provider, Moyer said.

There have been reports of students suffering symptoms at Puget Sound-area high schools including Marysville, Ballard, Juanita, Mount Si and Skyline, KOMO reported.

Students from Pierce and Kitsap counties may also have become ill, Snohomish Health District spokeswoman Suzanne Pate told The Daily Herald of Everett.

It’s called Norovirus. Occurs in may hotels, schools, and cruise lines.

It happens everywhere, and follows the fecal-oral route to infect a person. Translation: don't eat poop.

You can't kill norovirus with Lysol either..the only thing that kills it is bleach!!
      • gryphon 3 mths ago
Lysol is rapidly becoming useless (aside from being dangerous in and of itself by virtue of the chemicals), as we are managing to create resistant strains of almost everything. Great point Kate!

Either someone came to the competition with a virus and spread it or the food was contaminated.

It's most likely that this is going to turn out to be a Noro virus outbreak, and if so, there's not a whole hell of a lot they can do about it except let it run its course. Noro is highly contagious, and it's common in situations like this where there is a lot of crowding and people sharing the same environments for long periods of time. And there isn't just one Noro virus- there are at least two dozen different strains of the virus known to science. Some are relatively benign, and others ( like the one mentioned here) are incredibly virulent and cause severe illness. There's no vaccine against this virus, because it typically doesn't affect the general population very much. Most people who get Noro do so because they are in a situation involving crowding of some type, such as on a cruise ship. The only bad part about this virus is that it sometimes will cause vomiting that is so severe that people require emergency treatment for dehydration. I've known at least 3 different families which contracted and recovered from this virus, and in each case, there was at least one person who had to be rushed to the ER for dehydration treatment. Usually, the disease hits kids first, and then it infects the adult caregivers who must stay with the kids.

It takes as little as 100 particles of this virus to make an adult sick- and kids can get it with as few as 25. Norovirus causes intense nausea and vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, SEVERE fatigue, and sometimes, a low grade fever. When victims vomit, they throw up large quantities of virus- and that's how the disease spreads. It quickly becomes aerosolized, and once it gets into the ventilation system of some place like a cruise ship, that's it- it will keep making people sick until everyone on board has had it. Crowded hotels often have the same issue, especially if they are designed with a single ventilation system the way most are. This is the reason why Norovirus has proven to be so devastating to the cruise ship industry. Cruise ships are like islands- they are self contained and alone, and there's nowhere to run and nowhere to hide on them. Norovirus is associated with seafood consumption, especially raw seafood. That's why it's essential that ALL seafood be COOKED before it is eaten. Eating raw oysters or clams on the half shell is a mistake, especially these days. But the biggest way to eliminate it is to eliminate the overcrowding that leads to it.

Noro Virus. 2 cruise ships had to release thier passengers and disinfect everything last week, too, it goes around. Very contagious.

It's always lack of personal hygienne; always lack of hand washing. One waitress in a Miami deli sent 77 people to the hospital because she had fecal matter on her hands and passed it on to their food and she wasn't even fired.

Oh, lovely! It always amazes me how people respond to these outbreaks. I forget the exact numbers, but a recent poll indicated that something like 40 percent (maybe more) of respondents admitted to not routinely washing their hands after using the bathroom. That's just nasty!

Not "always." But it is a large percentage, to be sure! Amazing what simple hand washing and disinfecting of working surfaces and tools will prevent.

We've got diarrhea, yes we do. We've got diarrhea, how bout YOU??!!!
    • gogo  •  3 mths ago
      They probably ate bad food.
      • Just Me, Richard 3 mths ago
Most likely didn't wash their hands or disinfect kitchen utensils. Food poisoning would have been even worse.
      • Bear, Pop 3 mths ago
Yup. It's amazing what can be on hands. A quick wash-up might could have alleviated the whole issue.

That stuff is going around in my area pretty bad, I had it, then my son had it, then both my daughters and the hubby last. The thing is people said it can be a food thing, but when we caught it we all ate something different the night before. The disease is easily spread just from not washing your hands and if you are on those mats used at the event, it could have been easily spread.

With that much illness, I doubt it was a case of not washing hands. In the food.

Did they travel there by cruise ship by any chance?

Alot of parents are no longer having their kids vaccinated or getting their shots. They worry about the side effects. Also others say it is against their religion to get the immunizations. Also as someone stated , people enter the country bringing in different diseases. I say if you live here or visit here you need to get the proper shots and vaccinations. No excuses or exceptions. Why do we need to live in fear of a new disease or reoccurence of a once irradicated disease because of someone elses beliefs.
