National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day
The driving force among a number of superstitions is luck, good or bad. Superstitions are "beliefs or practices resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown or trust in magic or chance," according to Santa Rosa College. Thomas Edward Knibb originated National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day, encouraging you to turn your back to bad luck and open an umbrella indoors.
Was Barbie lucky or unlucky to meet up with Ken? The Ken Doll, aka Ken Carson, debuted on March 13, 1961. Mattel introduced him as Barbie's boyfriend. He had "brown hair and his own fashionable wardrobe," according to Mattel. Ken, voiced by Michael Keaton, had a decent role in "Toy Story 3" and proved once and for all he was way more into his clothes than he was into his blond bombshell girlfriend.
Coconut Torte Day
Gilligan and his shipwrecked friends were a "living" example of what ancient Sanskrit writing had already revealed. In Sanskrit, the coconut palm was described as "kalpa vriksha," which means "the three which gives all that is necessary for living," according to "The Oxford Companion to American Food and Drink." The coconut tree and its parts can be used for everything from herbal medicine (roots) to thatching for buildings (the fronds).
Coconut water will quench your thirst and desserts made with coconut are rich and creamy. Coconut Torte Day highlights the coconut in a rich, nearly flour-free dessert. Try a yummy coconut almond torte or a coconut torte made with chocolate.
Planet Uranus Discovery
So far Uranus is still a planet. Astronomer Sir William Herschel discovered the third largest planet by diameter and the seventh planet from the sun on March 17, 1781. The planet's name may still cause giggles among school children, who have not yet learned this pronunciation. Uranus is named for "the ancient Greek deity of the Heavens, the earliest supreme god. Uranus was the son and mate of Gaia the father of Cronus (Saturn) and of the Cyclopes and Titans (predecessors of the Olympian gods)," according to Nine Planets.
Organize Your Home Office Day
If your productivity is less than it should be, your home office may be to blame. It can't be you, right? Lisa Kanarek of WorkingNaked.com advises setting aside the second Tuesday of March to organize and purge files and tackle that pesky to-do list.
* Organize all of the loose, stray items in your home office with these eight ideas.
* Make your office functional.
* Corral papers and keep inspirational items visible on a "revealer" advises Nate Berkus.
* Replace home office machines with an "all-in-one" machine that prints, copies, scans and faxes. The smaller footprint (and often low price) of these machines makes them ideal for most space-challenged home offices" advises Kanarek.
