Marine's wife killed in Calif. propane explosion

COLEVILLE, Calif. (AP) — The person killed in a propane gas explosion outside a remote Northern California training base was the wife of a U.S. Marine, and the two people seriously injured were a Navy corpsman and his wife, military officials said on Saturday.

The officials did not release the victims' names, saying they were still in the process of contacting next of kin.

The explosion around 9 p.m. Friday occurred at a housing unit in the Mono County town of Coleville for the U.S. Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, where Marines train for mountain operations.

It was related to the housing area's propane distribution system, and was not associated with activities at the Marine base, which is about 30 miles away, according to Marine spokesman Capt. Nicholas Mannweiler.

Mannweiler said seven duplexes were damaged and 38 families were evacuated, most because utilities serving their homes were shut off for safety reasons. At least some are staying with other people in town.

The evacuations had not been lifted as of Saturday afternoon at the housing unit, which is made up of 38 duplexes and some stand-alone homes, Mannweiler said.

"We have to inspect everything to make sure we're not jeopardizing our families," he said.

The two people who were injured suffered third-degree burns and shock and were flown to hospitals — one to Renown medical center in Reno, Nev., and the other to the University of California, Davis Medical Center — in serious condition, Mannweiler said. He did not have an update on their conditions.

A spokesman for Renown referred calls to military officials. UC Davis asked for the patient's name.

Other people suffered superficial cuts and bruises in the explosion, which is being investigated with help from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Located at an altitude of about 9,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada mountains near the Nevada border, the Mountain Warfare Training Center is one of the Marine's most remote posts.

The base, which has about 160 Marines and 300 support staff, conducts unit and individual training for action in mountainous, high altitude and cold weather areas.

"As Marines, we tend to take pretty good pride in being in shape," Mannweiler said. "But guys come out to (this base) to see what they are made of."

Many service members on the base have seen combat action, said Rodney Allen, the training center's deputy director.

He said families are coming together to help those who were affected.

"Military families are resilient," he said.

This is very sad for the husband, I hope they had no kids who will be affected for their entire lives. I hate to hear of kids losing a parent. I also hope the 2 in the hospital recover & dont suffer once they are awake, 3rd degree burns cause horrible pain.

It seems kind of nice and I'm sure the intent is nice, but to hope they had no kids?

To hope that millions of years of human evolution and survival by all of her ancestors that finally culminated in her birth and life will now end with her because she has no progeny, that this line of evolution is at a dead end because of a freak accident?

I'm sorry for their children's loss if they have kids, but I wish they have kids. It sucks to lose your mom, but it's better than never existing at all.

At the present, there is no indication that this unfortunate incident is nothing more than an unforseen accident. My most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Marine and his family and I pray for a safe and speedy recovery for the "Doc" and his wife. Having been at that location for training many years ago, I can tell you that the Marines, Corpsmen and staff are professionals and safety conscious 100% of the time. Semper Fi.

Years ago during my little stint in the Marines I went to that base for a few weeks, it's in Bridgeport. I was on mess duty and tried to pull the deep fat frier away from the wall to clean behind it. I had to stop when I smelled gas. It turned out the frier had a gas pipe leading into it instead of a hose. I had cracked it and we had to evacutate the messhall. The guy from base maintenance who came to fix it said half the base would have been destroyed if it had ignited.

As long as no one was hurt that would have only been a improvement to the base.,

Wow! We have some really evil trollers on here. How soon they forget their right to come on here and say all this crap is because the Military is willing to lay down their life to keep us safe and protects our freedoms. God bless them all and sincere condolences to this family!!
