Maritzburg 2-0 Ajax CT

Jayiya wants game-time

Second-half goals from Bongolethu Jayiya and Michael Morton gave Maritzburg United a valuable 2-0 win over Ajax Cape Town at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night. As poor as both sides were in the opening 45 minutes, it was Ajax who had the best chance of the half. Tashreeq Morris was played in by Toriq Losper and found himself one-on-one with United shot stopper Shu-Aib Walters on eight minutes, but the effort lacked any conviction and was hit straight at the goalkeeper. United would have their own half chances through Terrance Mandaza and Heinrich Isaacks, but it stayed 0-0 at the break. A potentially disappointing game got the goal it needed just four minutes after the restart when Jayiya smashed home a knocked down header from Isaacks, who had out jumped the Ajax defence to reach Ruben Cloete's cross from the left. Anssi Jaakkola had no chance in the Ajax goal, and United were 1-0 up. It would get better for Steve Komphela's charges just 15 minutes later when Nhlanhla Vilakazi was brought down in the area by Nazeer Allie and a penalty was awarded to Maritzburg. Morton was confident, and sent Jaakkola the wrong way as he slid the ball into the net for the first goal of his professional career. Ajax were stretched as they went in search of a goal to get back in the game, but both goalkeepers finished the game strongly to keep it 2-0. The win sees United leapfrog University of Pretoria into 11th place on the table table with 34 points, just a point behind Ajax in 10th.
