Mark-to-market pension accounting may benefit some firms' earnings, WSJ says

Rising rates and a strong year for stocks could raise earnings at some large companies that have made an arcane but significant change to the way their pension plans are valued, reports the Wall Street Journal. Some 30 companies could show stronger results than some expect when they report Q4 earnings in coming weeks. In the past few years they've switched to "mark-to-market" pension accounting to make it easier for investors to gauge plan performance.
