The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall was unveiled Monday to the public. The memorial's centerpiece is a 30 foot tall granite monument of King standing strongly with his arms crossed and his "I Have a Dream" speech rolled up in hand. Visitors greeted the sight with a range of emotions from awe to tears.

Speaking to USA Today, 73-year-old visitor Dudley Sims expressed his feelings toward the civil rights leader's monument, saying, "The dream has come true, the realization of what this man spoke on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial [during the March on Washington in 1963], this is the culmination of a dream that I in my lifetime never thought I'd see."

Here is a brief look at some key facts that went into creating such a tribute:

    * In 1984, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity member George Sealey began a conversation on honoring Dr. Martin Luther King with a national memorial. 14 years later, President Clinton signed a joint congressional resolution authorizing the memorial to be erected.

    * After a competition was held in 1999, a design by ROMA Design Group of San Francisco was chosen.

    * The memorial design includes a boulder that has separated into two pieces, and another piece which sits further out. The two separated pieces create an entry for visitors to pass through on their way to view the sculpture of King carved from that third piece.

    * The two-piece boulder is called The Mountain of Despair. It is meant to represent the struggle. As you exit, you then enter a wide open plaza which represents freedom after going through the struggle.

    * The third piece, which contains the sculpture of King, is called the Stone of Hope and is the focal point of the memorial.

    * The image of MLK was carved by master sculptor Lei Yixin. Initially there was some criticism of the selection of Lei because he is a Chinese citizen instead of an American.

    * "The Mountain of Despair" and "Stone of Hope" were created using 159 blocks of granite from North America and Asia. Their names were taken from Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

    * Randy Burkett designed the memorial lighting. According to KSDK St. Louis, he designed the lighting for the sculpture of King in way that is meant to make him strong yet still approachable.

    * Other key elements of the memorial design are an inscription wall, trees, and water.

    * The inscription wall is 450 feet long, crescent-shaped and contains 14 quotes from King carved into it the granite. The 14 quotes were purposely chosen from other material than Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

    * Yoshino cherry trees will blossom each spring around the time when King was assassinated as a symbol of peace and renewed hope.

    * The memorial sits on 4 acres of land on the northwest corner of the Tidal Basin. Its actual address is 1964 Independence Ave., SW, Washington DC. The street number is meant to represent Dr. King's involvement in the Civil Right's Act of 1964.

    * The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is the first memorial on the National Mall that is not in honor of a president or war hero.

    * The memorial cost $120 million.

    * The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial will be officially dedicated Sunday, which will be the 48th anniversary of his "I Have a Dream" speech and March on Washington.

      About Time.

Sorry, but I am just not getting that 'tingly' feeling all over my body about this dedication ceremony....after all, every day, I drop my kids off at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Grade School on my way to work at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Federal Building. As I drive along Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Boulavard on my way to work, I can see the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. park is not very busy today...but I suspect the park will be a lot busier on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday!

OK...so tell me again, why THIS dedication ceremony is so important?

I understand the monument was paid for by donations. If so, I have no quarrel with it. The Viet Nam Memorial had to be paid for by donations and wasn't allowed to be a raised memorial. That I have a problem with.

Do they allow you to walk your dog on the National Mall? My dog has never taken a whizz on a $120 MILLION monument...the photo would be priceless!

...and NO...I'm not racist....its about the $120 Million, not about Chinese Eyed King Marty of the Imperial Order of the White Stone....lol!.
    • Mike  •  9 mths ago
We FINALLY have equality! Finally! $120 Million....NO group of white leaders could have milked and stolen from a project for more that amount...NO WAY!....EQUALITY at last!

...and the King Family demanding and getting a million to release the likeness and name for the monument in his honor......NO WHITE FAMILY could EVER top that for sleaziness! Truly we have EQUALITY!
    • Mike  •  9 mths ago
His gravestone says "Free at last, Free at last"...guess they missed that when they built the monument encasing most of his body in stone. LOL!

President O'Blamer kept the other half unfinished...he plans to have himself carved onto the backside of King Marty.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  9 mths ago
Fine, so he got a monument. What is quite disgusting is the fact that it is larger than memorials of great men who shaped the beginning of this great country. I have a dream too, that black people will quit mating like wild animals, get educations, quit killing each other and get jobs and be productive instead of being drains on our country.

Wow you really feel that way. Sooooo sad you must be a genius yourself.
      • Mike 9 mths ago
I have a dream....someday we will see how friggen' STUPID it is to spend $150 MILLION on a monument...and how SHAMEFUL it was for US to have to pay off the King family for the statue!
      • Mike 9 mths ago
I think we need a public award medal to go along with it....similar to the Medal of Honor...we can call it the "Chinese Eyed King Marty of the Imperial Order of the White Stone" award and award it to the Congressional Black Caucus member who wastes the most tax dollars on any one project!

Its beautiful, and I personally love it, thank God our government had the $800,000 to pay the King foundation to release his name, or we might not be enjoying it.
      • Mike 9 mths ago
Every great leader leaves a heard of squabling low life scum bag heirs behind and it is the same with Marty....oh my, have they put a trademark on "Marty"?
    • b  •  9 mths ago
Who picks the artists for the memorials? Whomever it is, should be shot! An Austrian did the WWII monument and made it look like something out of the NAZI era and now a chinese artist did Martin Luther Kings' monument and made him look like Mao. What are we doing??? Aren't there any American artists out there who can depicks what Americans feel about the subject matter?
      • Mike 9 mths ago
The organizers searched across the entire USA for a black american artist to make the monument....but since it involved WORK, not one Black American applied.
      • b 9 mths ago
And how are these announcements made? via computer. A true artist isn't hooked into a computer. Did anyone actually go out and seek real American artists or just rely on public communitations. Do the committees even KNOW artists and their work or just make "public" announcements which no artist is actively looking for since they are busy being creative. And I really resent your remark!

I found it odd the extent of Dr. King's plagiarism in his works. Entire sections lifted for his doctoral dissertation, for example. How peculiar to glorify a man not entirely capable of producing his own ideas?
    • Big Wheel  •  9 mths ago
Hey China. How much for a 40 foot high bamboo curtain to fit around it?
      • Mike 9 mths ago
forget the curtain....we've already paid $120 Mill....how much more to FINISH the other half of the monstrosity?
    • Big Wheel  •  9 mths ago
The National Mall has been desecrated. Tupac will be next. (Carved by the Zulu Nation)

Haa haa Ahaaa Haa ha ROF aahhhaaa ha ha ha........... "I have a fortune cookie..."
    • wr  •  9 mths ago
It is a nice monument. The art work is excellent, but for some unknown reason, I just don't like it. He looks so mean. Seems like his face and body language should have depicted hope.
      • Big Wheel 9 mths ago
So put a 40 foot tall bamboo curtain around it...
      • Mike 9 mths ago
It is an AWSOME monument to Star Wars! Every time I see it, I will think of poor Hans Solo, encased in Carbonite awaiting the judgement of Jabba the Hutt! ...and all that for ONLY $120 Million!
    • P. Ricketts  •  9 mths ago
OK seriously, By whom was this MADE IN CHINA masterpiece commissioned?I thought it was a joke at first, but now I am getting #$%$ Did some democrat committee think this was a joking matter, aren't there any starving artists in America that could done this? Who paid for it? Taxpayers or donations?
    • Mike  •  9 mths ago
lol....looks like MLK has been frozen in Carbonite and is ready to ship to Jaba the Hut....lol!
