Maryland Recognizes National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Governor O’Malley, DBED and Public-Private Partners Conduct Business Development and Marketing Activities to Position Maryland as Epicenter of Information Assurance and Innovation

Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) September 29, 2011

Maryland continues to move forward with CyberMaryland, an aggressive business development and marketing initiative to strengthen Maryland’s burgeoning cybersecurity industry and protect the nation’s digital infrastructure. Introduced by Governor Martin O’Malley in January 2010 to position the state as the epicenter of cybersecurity, CyberMaryland will have a significant presence at a series of events and activities marking National Cybersecurity Month in October.

To kick off Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Governor O’Malley will join Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger at Cyber Core Technologies on October 6 to officially open the company’s state-of-the-art facility in Elkridge. The new building includes an expanded logistics center and a cutting-edge integration lab. While visiting Cyber Core, Governor O’Malley will also convene industry leaders to assess the state’s progress in and identify emerging issues in the rapidly-changing field of cybersecurity. More than a quarter of a million Marylanders work in the state’s technology sector, including some 60,000 who work in computer systems design and related services.

“As a state and as a nation, we face unique security challenges,” said Governor O’Malley. “Maryland has a vital network of cybersecurity assets—from entrepreneurs who work to stop cyber attacks by developing new and cutting edge technologies to educators who are training the next generation of cyber warriors. Together, working with our federal and local partners, we have an opportunity to create jobs and uphold our responsibility to protect and defend the nation’s digital infrastructure.”

Capitalizing on the priorities outlined in CyberMaryland: Epicenter for Information Security & Innovation, Maryland is taking a multi-pronged approach to positioning the state as the hub of the country’s cybersecurity efforts. To address the need for a pipeline of highly-skilled cyber warriors, Maryland is a founding sponsor – along with SAIC and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County – of the inaugural Maryland Cyber Challenge (MDC3). The event, being held at the Baltimore Convention Center on October 21 and 22, features 24 high school, college and professional teams competing for scholarships and prize money.

To market Maryland as the national center for cybersecurity, an online and print CyberMaryland advertising campaign will debut during October on WashingtonPost.com and a new exhibit showcasing Maryland’s cyber strengths will be launched at MDC3 and be featured at many regional and national trade shows, conferences and events.

To identify business development opportunities outside the state – and to reach out to cyber companies that may be interested in expanding or relocating to Maryland – state representatives will join Howard County and Baltimore City officials on a call mission to Palo Alto, California, from October 4-6. The Department will host a reception for 30 high-tech businesses at the Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley at Palo Alto on October 6.

“Maryland’s cyber companies are well established in the government market,” said DBED Secretary Christian Johansson. “The Palo Alto visit offers an opportunity to meet with the fastest growing cyber companies in the commercial space. We hope to leverage this opportunity to expand Maryland companies’ presence in the commercial market.”
