Massachusetts law professor calls care packages for U.S. troops ‘shameful’

A Massachusetts law professor has created a campus firestorm with an email to colleagues that declares it would be “shameful” to send care packages to U.S. troops “who have gone overseas to kill other human beings.”

Michael Avery, a professor at Suffolk University Law School, sent a five-paragraph email to colleagues in response to a school-wide appeal for care packages for deployed soldiers, Fox affiliate WFXT-TV reports.

“I think it is shameful that it is perceived as legitimate to solicit in an academic institution for support for men and women who have gone overseas to kill other human beings,” Avery wrote.

I served in OIFIII and we don't 'go over there to kill other human beings'. The US military doesn't decide for itself to go to war, the US government does (the military is just an instrument for war).

You wanna protest the war? Fine, go write your Congressman and President, but stop barking up the wrong tree, the soldiers/Marines didn't send themselves to war. They were asked by their country to do so.

Michael Avery, taste the other side before you open your mouth. You've literally shamed your university. Prick.
      • Tomahawk07 6 mths ago
Well said Edward. I served in OIF 2...We never fired unless fired upon...and sometines didn't fire at all because they used crowds of women and children as shields.

        Precisely

Another leftover hippie beatnik professor living in the protective cocoon of a liberal college institution living off grant money totally clueless. And these are the wackos we charge with educating our children. These are the most dangerous liberals on the planet.
      • You Asked For It 6 mths ago
Don't associate a "liberal" or "hippie" with that idiot or you are as bad as he is. PS: He is a wacko. I hope is salary is not paid for by the government.
      • Bozer 6 mths ago
Sorry but you have to be a liberal to think like that. Period.

The funny thing is, if war ever came to our soil in full-force, I bet he'd be all warm and welcome to our US military personnel.

Let's see: he knocks US troops, but he gives the very government that sent them there a pass? Isn't that backwards?

This guy would bow to whatever power attacked the U.S. and sell everyone else out in the process.

I am not surprised. My granddad was a USGI, my Dad was a USGI, and I was a USGI. What little the three of us did as GI's across three wars in the greatest military in the world is miles above the value of the brain gastroenterological gas that escaped from his mouth. The most difficult thing this e**head does every day is decide what flavor coffee he wants for breakfast. How incredible! A document about 7,000 words long and this is the best that he can say? Let's be clear (as our POTUS is wont to say), no one has ever accused Academia of being relevant, especially Constitutional lawyers (do I see a trend here?). When other countries try to conquer your country, you go to your military to defend your country. Does this guy need to have someone teach him about the birds and the bees, too? There, that's my exercise of First Amendment Rights. I believe I did a better job than he did, and I have my freedom 235 years after the signing of the Constitution because of what the AMERICAN military has done, not because of what this Professor has done. He's the kind of person we had carry ammo when bullets started flying. Have a nice day, Professor.

Thanks for your service brother, you do the hard job, and you do it without waivering. I'm retired air force, I loved every opportunity I got to get my boots dirty, And serving assignments with marines was always a highlight. There is a dedication there that only the few, and the proud can understand. Semper Fi.

Why didn't the SOB just stay there, he would fit in fine. Guess those guys that flew those planes into the towers who came from a foreign country to kill us don't count.
    • You Asked For It  •  6 mths ago
Really? Let's drop him off in the tribal region of Pakistan wearing an "Uncle Sam" outfit and follow his progress by a drone while hiding a mic on his person. We'll see how he's appreciated and I'm sure his last though may be something like "I wish a Marine was here to save me!"

Hey bozo, attack the war machine that sent them there. Not our soldiers.
    • MatthewB  •  Iowa City, United States  •  6 mths ago
That is a valid position, as the purpose of the military is indeed to be prepared to help kill people. However, I would tell Prof. Avery that:

      1) Our soldiers in Iraq & Afghanistan are practicing counter-insurgency. A lot of this is not about seek-and-destroy but about using their armed presence to discourage insurgents (at least until the soldiers leave the area!).

      2) It's not all about being ready to kill, either. Our military is also guarding people who do infrastructure and humanitarian work.

      3) A connection with home reminds a soldier that there is an outside world that's not about war, and that (s)he should not behave in a way that the folks back home would find shameful. If you're only around soldiers & their culture, it's easier to forget the standards of normal society.

What I don't get is that if we are sending men and woman into harms way to protect our liberty, why aen't we giving them what they need? Why do our men and women in unfiorm need to rely upon donations. Don't tell me its becasue of the budget deficit. Then we shold not be fighwing wars we canot afford.

i'm pretty sure that if this selfish pr!ck went to the desert during the holidays that he'd want a couple care packages as well. How DARE you try to take away from what the people of our armed forces are doing right now! Nearly one hundred of my dad's colleagues are overseas risking their lives everyday for people like you, and that's how you thank them?!?! By voting against care packages? Unbelievable!
