The play The End Of Longing opened on Thursday evening, however, despite high hopes was badly received by the majority of critics.

The Friends actor plays a recovering alcoholic searching for ‘love and contentment’ and is believed to have drawn inspiration from his own experiences of addiction.

Despite this, the show is already being considered a flop.

The Telegraph’s Dominic Cavendish gave the production two out of five stars saying: ‘There’s little disguising the fact that it is essentially a dud…

'It all feels like a curious waste of time, money and effort - and I’m sure I won’t be the only one watching this rickety star vehicle who’s left longing for the end.’

Also giving two stars was The Independent’s Holly Williams who called the play, ‘a woeful attempt at a dark-but-redemptive romcom.’

The Stage’s Mark Shenton also had mixed feelings: 'Much of this feels superficial, the emotions phoney and barely earned.’

However, the reviews weren’t all bad with WhatsOnStage.com’s Michael Coveney writing more positively about the production: 'The writing is wired, raw, politically incorrect and very funny, and it’s given a sharp kick in the goolies by some superb performances from all four actors.’

If you want to make up your own mind, then The End Of Longing is currently showing at London’s Playhouse Theatre until May 14th.
