Maury County firefighters respond to barn fire in Williamsport

The Maury County Fire Department was dispatch to the scene of a burning barn this weekend, protecting valuable property from the flames that spread quickly through the structure located in a rural portion of the county.

The volunteer firefighters arrived on scene in the rural community of Williamsport where the fire was reported on a private property.

About 50% of the structure, a traditional barn, was engulfed when the responders arrived on scene.

Much of the structure was flattened by the blaze. The firefighters were able to recover some of the property owner's valuables trapped inside.

“Firefighters worked quickly to stop the spreading flames and successfully put out the fire,” Savannah Maddison, a public information officer with the Maury County Fire Department.

“Due to the quick actions of all involved, multiple items were salvaged, including a tombstone," Maddison added.

It has been a busy month for the volunteer department.

They were dispatched earlier in January to Columbia’s Rally Hill Road, where swift water rescue teams were deployed to rescue two people from inside a vehicle that was swept away in the rising waters of a creek.

The local department was also dispatched to the scene of a burning tractor trailer along I-65 as well as two other house fires in the county.
