McCain: Obama may ‘get away’ with circumventing Congress on jobs act

Arizona Sen. John McCain said Thursday that Senate Republicans “will do everything” they can to try to “stop” President Obama from implementing parts of his $447 billion jobs plan without congressional approval.

But McCain admits Obama “could get away with it.”

    Watch:

McCain made the statements during an unveiling of the “http://mccain.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressOffice.PressReleases&ContentRecord_id=feb4d840-c3be-83b1-a1fb-b7f2a039e94d”>Jobs Through Growth Act” — the Republican alternative to Obama’s American Jobs Act.

“I’m sure that the president and other presidents before him, Republican and Democrats have tried to exceed their constitutional authority, but we will do everything we can to try to stop it but I’m not saying he can’t get away with something,” McCain said, in response to a question from TheDC.

Obama told his advisers on the White House Jobs and Competitiveness Council in Pittsburgh on Tuesday that he is “not going to wait for Congress” to act on jobs.

“So my instruction to … all the advisers who are sitting around the table is, scour this report, identify all those areas in which we can act administratively without additional congressional authorization, and just get it done,” he said. (RELATED: Jackson: Obama should declare a ‘national emergency,’ add jobs with ‘extra-constitutional’ action)

On numerous occasions, the president has vowed to find common ground with Republicans in Congress.

“I’ve shown repeatedly my willingness to work overtime to try to get them to do something to deal with this high unemployment rate. What we haven’t seen is a similar willingness on their part to try to get something done,” Obama said on Thursday. “I don’t know when rebuilding our roads and bridges that are decaying became a partisan issue.”

McCain said there has been “no outreach” by President Barack Obama to congressional Republicans on job creation.

The politics in this country has surpassed laughable, sad, stupid, and greedy....its now reached ludicrous! We need fresh, new, constituent-based elected officials and the only way to get them is to -- Vote Out All Incumbent Congressmen and Women.

63% of Americans want him to "Get Away With It" you stupid old man. You time of good service to this country is appreciated, and long gone. It's #$%$ like you that are Fu^%ing up the country for your own benefit.

Let's hope so. The Republicans have done nothing but obstruct, hoping that it hurts President Obama politically. It may or may not be hurting the president, but for sure it is hurting the country, and that is traitorous.

The Republican plan is to kill anything Obama wants and wait for McDonalds to hire 30,000 part-timers.

WAKE UP! Working people of the United States. Congress will never pass a tax bill for the rich, because they are the rich. Every Senator in the Senate is a millionaire.

The problem is the political version of reach out is to call the other party and ask, "are you ready to vote for my plan yet?" Neither party thinks the other is reaching out and both claim to be reaching out. Stop defending the Republicans and the Democrats. If the congress is nearly split 50-50 but the congressional approval rating is only 11%, then both Dems and Reps are failing. If it were 50% disapproval then you could bury your head and claim it must be them (the cursed other party), but it really must be all of them. You cannot condemn Congress then defend YOUR congressman. YOU cannot be only one with a good congressman. It is not statically possible that everyone posting here hate Congress but loves their own congressman. It is not for the other guy to vote out the #$%$ it is for all of us to vote all of them out. 90% turnover.

nearly ??? you should probably take a good hard look at how its suppose to work really what we need is a place for a middle party I would like to simply call them the American party that can look at both sides of an issue and make the deciding vote FOR THE AMERICAN people based on what the votes from the people say and nothing else
      • Lostcustomer 7 mths ago
When one party has Palosi, Reid, Waters, Frank and they don't even want people to read legislation before they vote, you know there has to be something in the woodpile that they don't want you to know about. The Republicans have offered 11 job bills in the Senate and Reid won't even have them discussed. The only one he allowed to come to a vote was Obama's job bill which even some Democrats don't want because it is still just more of the same while getting us more in debt. Why don't the idiots that put them in office vote them out; the country would appreciate it.
      • Elaine 7 mths ago
Lostcustomer, legislation is rarely, if ever leaked to the public. It's written in legalese, and as many posts here indicate, it's indecipherable to the average reader. Further, they're our REPRESENTATIVES. They REPRESENT us. It's THEIR job to read the legislation and vote on it according to their constituents' best interest.

Sadly, it seems that the corporate oligarchs are people, too, and more equal than we humans. Not only do they pay huge bribes to our lawmakers to pass or kill bills, they also see to it that dissenters are kept off key committeees.

Congress is too busy doing the work of their lobbyists overlords to care about what the president is doing...

OMG! Did McCain vote for Obama in 2008? Not only did he run a wishy-washy campaign back then, but now he is making excuses for BO to circumvent Congress on this so-called "jobs" bill.

I hear ABC News is reporting how these construction jobs are going to the Chinese, in the US. Not even an illegal alien can get a construction job nowadays!
      • Mordecai Irony 7 mths ago
The Chinese did the billion dollar retrofit on the SF Bay Bridge. Thank the libiot klass, sellout politicriminals plus Barry & Co.
      • Mordecai Irony 7 mths ago
That was my first thought too as McCain is such a turncoat loser.
      • Elaine 7 mths ago
You guys are absolutely devoid of clues. McCain is saying that Obama can pass the bill whether they like it or not. If it fails, it makes them look good. But it won't fail. It may not be wildly successful, but it will be somewhat successful. EVERYONE IN DC KNOWS THAT. When it succeeds, they'll get voted out of office and replaced by democrats. He's warning them to pass at least parts of it and keep their #$%$ covered.

9.1% unemployment? HA HA HA HA Just wait till all the soldiers get home!! and start looking for work!
      • Sandra 7 mths ago
Wow I think that is what Obama is looking at and also why the tea naggers want the war to continue
    • A Yahoo! User  •  7 mths ago
This might be a challenge. McCain figures Obama isn't man enough to try an end-run around Congress on this. Cuz if it crashes, then BO is holding the bag.
    • none  •  7 mths ago
hey #$%$ people need jobs so what do you do "JUST SAY NO"
      • Lostcustomer 7 mths ago
Love the way everything is an emergency just because the anointed one says so. Nice he didn't do anything before he went to Martha's Vineyard for a month and then made a big production of trying to get it passed without reading it again. Now he says it's the Republicans fault. No, it is his fault. Had he been working on something other than another stimulus bill then there would be a lot of reaching across the isle. Still no budget in three years. Just more of the spend, spend, spend, tax, tax, tax and no cuts. The US will be be downgraded again. This country use to be the number one exporter before 2008, now we are #4. It's on Obama's shift; can't blame Bush or the Republicans for this. This country is headed in the wrong direction and his highness just wants to do more of the same failed policies that got us here. I'm a registered Democrat and I'd vote for my dog before I would vote for that buffoon in 2012.
