McDonald's bans mom on clean play-area crusade

CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona mother of four has received a hand-delivered letter from a lawyer prohibiting her from setting foot in eight Phoenix-area McDonald's and threatening her with criminal trespassing charges if she did.

Chandler resident Erin Carr-Jordan has been on a national crusade to clean up fast-food play areas, claiming the pathogens she found in them threaten children's health. She is also an Arizona State University Instructor.

Carr-Jordan tells The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/s9T4Gb ) the incident she believes led to the lawyer's letter happened during one of her repeated visits to a Gilbert McDonald's. Carr-Jordan alleges she discovered antibiotic-resistant Staph or MRSA, known to cause potentially life-threatening infections in the restaurant's PlayPlace.

A McDonald's spokeswoman in Illinois says the company has and will continue to talk with Carr-Jordan in an effort to address her concerns, but added that recent actions by Carr-Jordan have become disruptive to its employees and customers.

Did she also check the city public and school play areas?
      • Maureen S 7 mths ago
Right! Unfortunately, anywhere you have a bunch of children you have a bunch of germs... no matter HOW clean you are! This is why the good Lord gave us immune systems and lots of prayer!
      • laughingatu 7 mths ago
Do either of you idiots know what MRSA is? Immune systems isn't gonna do #$%$ against MRSA. It can kill you. Get educated before you let someone die for fks sake.

But that wouldn't give her as much publicity as "fighting" a big corporation.

You'll catch staph alot faster at a hospital!
      • Number 6 7 mths ago
Yeah - kids play at hospitals every day!
      • Gwendolyn 7 mths ago
@Floyd - You missed the point.
      • Sapphire 7 mths ago
You can catch anything in a hospital.

I agree that the play places are dirty (Hey, young kids play and have a bunch of fun there) and I agree that McDonalds and all fast food places serve very unhealthy food. However, we have a choice, if you don't like these places, DON'T GO THERE!!!
      • nslipknot 7 mths ago
The first and last comment ill read here! 100 percent agree'd! I haven't eaten at Mc Donalds in years, shopped at walmart in OVER a year now etc etc. We have choices. Im fortunate to have a life style where I spend A LOT of my time looking for ORGANIC restaurants and AMERICAN made products! You are a very smart person and keep posting!
      • nslipknot 7 mths ago
PS Im not hating on Walmart, I'm just starting to figure out that most other stores are just as cheap as walmart now so they can compete! No need for walmart anymore!
      • JPLooney 7 mths ago
Yes, you have a choice and a reponsibility, and to not take heed to warnings of proven problems when others such as this woman point them out to you is not just an ignorant choice, but an irresponsible one. So I wont be going there, as my choice, and you can go there, as yours, but I'm still going to spread the word about how dangerous what "youre" doing is. As my choice, and you totally do not have to listen to it, as is yours.

I grew up on a farm...cow poop, horse poop, chicken poop, dust, dirt, mud and loads of bacteria...and it never hurt us or anybody we knew...in fact we grew up pretty resistant to disease, unlike the cocoon-kids of today. Your body NEEDS exposure to "germs" to develop its natural resistance.
      • DABOMB 7 mths ago
I don't think we have MRSA on the farm. The rest of your post I agree with completely.

        Cocoon Kids love it

yea i also grew up on a farm and was exposed to all those things never had any bad effects.

And just HOW many kids urinate in pools and at waterparks? Oh please. Part of the problem with the tougher bacteria is that we have built a wall and the bacteria are coming over it. I agree with many. Outside was where it was at as a kid. Dirt, sunburns, skinned knees, cuts and any number of grossness under my nails and in the pockets of my pants.
Honestly, parents today are so over protective. The world is NOT soft, safe and sanitized.
    • Bianca  •  7 mths ago
Seriously, honey, you're at McDonald's. More kids have messed their pants in those ball pits than I even want to think about.
    • mommy2three  •  7 mths ago
NEWS FLASH....if you don't like the conditions of McDonald's play areas...DON"T GO!!! here's a thought...stay at home, feed you kids a healty, homecooked meal and let them play in backyard.

i'd be more worried about what is in the dam food
    • ruth  •  Sunnyvale, United States  •  7 mths ago
If this is your concern, why have you made 'repeated' visits to Mcdonalds ?? Take them to the park and let them get into real dirt.
    • LC  •  7 mths ago
You will find MRSA germs in every store, high school gymnasiums, playgrounds, hospitals, and most homes in America. It's on the floor, on the racks of new clothes, on the clothes, the best deterrant is wash your hands. Have your kids wash their hands, and no picking at sores. MRSA infection is dangerous and can kill you. Don't panic keep clean. WASH HANDS OFTEN.
    • Southern Rebel  •  7 mths ago
What people dont know is that anyone can get MRSA, Mcdonalds is not the only place. She might as well put her kids in a bubble. People contract diseases everyday. Some places will suprise you. I know because I work in EMS
    • Lisa  •  7 mths ago
If humans are present then so are germs. You can't get rid of them, they have been around longer than we have and will be here after we are gone. As we create drugs/products to kill them they evolve into something less susceptable. You can't protect your kids from everything. Take normal precautions and they should be fine.
    • paul  •  7 mths ago
Everyone should know that public play grounds (especially indoor ones) are a breeding ground for germs. I had 4 kids and it seemed everytime we let them play in any indoor public play area, one of them would usually get sick. I think it is normal for kids to get sick and develop their immune systems. Bottom line is parents have to use their heads and be parents. Nobody could keep one of those areas clean enough to where I would feel good about letting my kid play there because 2 minutes after the cleaners are done. Some snot-nosed kid is sliming it up again. Just the way life is folks.
    • imagine10  •  7 mths ago
I hate to tell you this, but it is impossible to live in a germ-free world. In a way, I would think being exposed to germs is a natural thing, and trying to sanitize everything could have a detrimental effect on children by keeping them from building up a resistance to bacteria (which will always be around so you need to develop a resistence to it). As to those that criticise fast food menus...easy solution, stay home and eat healthy. It is your responsibility as a parent to monitor what your child eats, not a fast food company.
    • JohnV  •  Griffith, United States  •  7 mths ago
You can catch the same germs from a school class room door knob, desk, or a slide in the park. The only way to be completely germ free is to live in a box and never leave or get sick or use the washroom good luck with that!
    • Sarah Lynn  •  7 mths ago
Oh My- If she thinks McDonald's playland is bad- wait until she see's what is on Walmart Shopping Carts, or even the knobs of the doors inside the university she works with. Furthermore- the plastic used to create those playplaces is Anti-Microbial- I'm not saying she is wrong, but, I don't think she is right either. There is no way to eradicate every single bacteria or virus- It is impossible. If she has that much of an issue with it- she should just not take her children to play there.
    • cementmanandred  •  7 mths ago
Parents and society as a whole have become so damned paranoid! When we were kids, we played in the dirt, rode bikes, scooters and skateboards WITHOUT helmets or knee pads. The WHOLE IDEA was to get dirty!!!!!
Parents today are creating a generation of of over-weight, lazy, x-box playing slugs!
    • Ndn_nfl  •  6 mths ago
Shhhhh,,,they don't want any of the sheeple to be aware of what to avoid when the next global epidemic hits! Rather than promote responsible birthcontrol,,,they would rather help "nature take it's course"
    • David  •  7 mths ago
I can't imagine where all the germs would have come from....maybe the 3 or 4 hundred kids that crawled all over it during the day?

Put your kids in a bubble, and leave the rest of us alone.

Of all the problems in the world, she chose this to crusade on? I bet her husband drinks about a fifth of Jack a night from dealing with this moonbat.....
