McLaren P1 Slays Bugatti Veyron in Airstrip Drag Race

From Road & Track

This might hurt a little. Like watching Jordan play his last game, or The Beatles give their last concert.

Because the legendary Bugatti Veyron, the original hypercar, the one that blew all of our minds from its introduction to the very end-it never had a chance. Not against the outrageous McLaren P1.

Not even the 8.0-liter, quad-turbo W16 at the heart of the Veyron could muster the oomph to depose the McLaren's combination of a 727-hp twin-turbo V8 and 176-hp hybrid drivetrain. The P1's 903 horses number 98 fewer than the Bugatti's, but it's all about that power-to-weight ratio, and that's where the McLaren truly shines.

Caveats, of course, abound. This is one of those airstrip supercar meet-ups where well-heeled owners pit their precious machines against each other. It's hardly the clinically controlled environment of a true drag strip, and these almost assuredly are not professional drivers. The Bugatti in question is a regular run-of-the-mill Veyron, and not the faster, more powerful Super Sport. They're also racing from a roll, which is exceedingly dumb and not drag racing in the purest sense.

But facts are facts. The McLaren P1 is just plain faster than the Veyron.

We take no joy in saying it, but it has to be said: The Veyron's reign is over.
