Meat Industry Spreads MRSA: Go Vegetarian Now

COMMENTARY | When I first went vegetarian seven years ago, I chose to do it for the environment. Knowing the impact of the meat industry on our planet -- the pollution of waterways, the emission of greenhouse gases, and the clear-cutting of ancient rainforest -- I could not, in good conscience, allow myself to eat meat. Concern for the planet still plays a role in my decision to avoid meat, but another factor also comes into play: concern for the health of my fellow humans. The meat industry is largely responsible for a dangerous, looming pandemic that currently claims the lives of 20,000 Americans each year. Out of concern and respect for those people, I choose not to eat meat.

According to a report by ABC's Mikaela Conley, new strains of the bacterium methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureas, or MRSA, are continuously discovered in livestock, and these strains may be spreading to human beings. On large-scale factory farms, where animals are kept in unnaturally confined, unsanitary quarters, livestock must be fed massive amounts of antibiotics in order to prevent infection. Bacteria quickly build up resistance to these drugs, with the particularly virulent "superbug" MRSA becoming increasingly untreatable. When these bacteria jump from animal to human, severe infection and death can ensue.

My personal experience with MRSA makes the bug an especially sensitive topic. At 17, I developed a horrendously painful boil under my arm. After two minor surgeries and three mysteriously ineffective rounds of antibiotics, a culture revealed that MRSA was to blame for the infection. Even after the doctors discovered this, it took a year and a half of monthly minor surgeries, combined with regular injections of the world's strongest antibiotics, before the infection finally resolved. I was young, healthy, and blessed with access to medical care. Had I been older, immunocompromised, or uninsured, the bug could have easily claimed my life.

MRSA can and does claim new victims each day, and the numbers of casualties will grow higher as we continue to overuse antibiotics -- especially in livestock. Although the increasingly resistant MRSA strains aren't likely to jump to human victims through prepared meat, they can easily spread to the people who work on factory farms. I find this particularly disturbing, since many factory farm workers are undocumented immigrants, and almost all lack access to medical care. This means that the infections in farm workers are likely to go undiagnosed and untreated, so they can spread rapidly to the general population.

The abuse of antibiotics absolutely must stop. Overuse of these miracle drugs has led to a new era of untreatable illness, and we are mere decades away from pandemic if we don't change our ways. While antibiotics are necessary in many cases for human health, the factory farm industry is a colossal and dangerous machine that we do not need, that does no good to humans, animals, or the environment.

You do not have to be a tree-hugger or an animal lover to see the benefits of vegetarianism. Respect for human life, and a desire to halt the spread of untreatable illness, can and should be an equally valid motivation. I can't change the world or stop the spread of MRSA myself, but I'll keep declining my friends' invitations to McDonald's -- not just for myself, for cattle, or for the planet, but also to help save the lives of other human beings.

Seems to me, you can still have your meat, just chose to buy it from farms that don't have those conditions. Not all animals are raised this way. It may cost more, but is worth it in the long run.

        Wait a darn minute Dancinggirl..
Are you advocating having people making a Choice about something, based on criteria that are important to THEM???
        Better watch yourself.
comments advocating personal responsibility are, I believe, verboten on Yahoo.

I've ALWAYS been a meat lover, but recently, due to health issues, I've had to avoid all things meat and dairy. Let me tell you...I have honestly never felt better. I've lost weight. My BP is way down as is my cholesterol. I've found some really great ways to cook non-meat foods to make them taste amazing and I've not felt deprived even once. I'm not saying I'm going "veg"........but I've changed my mind about the "craziness" factor of the thought of it. Don't judge something unless you've tried it!

Good for you Pam! It's amazing how forgiving our bodies are and how we respond to eating well.

What about the constant outbreaks of e coli and other parasites from Fruits and Vegetables? As far as using strong antibiotics what other option is there? If there were any outbreaks of anything you would most likely be writing this article about wreckless meat practices. If vegetarianism is for you by all means, but next time you feel the need to write a smug article patting yourself on the back for no public service in particular try not to spread ignorance while you are doing it.

The Allosaurus and T-Rex did pretty well eating meat for a fifty million years or so.

What a $hitti propaganda. Crop industry spreads E. coli and a bunch of other pathogenic bacteria. Does that mean we should stop eating vegetables ;)

Monocultural agriculture practices have been WAY more detrimental to humanity and the earth than eating meat. Of course the meat industry is very bad, but the only way to really do the right, sustainable thing, is to grow/kill what you eat in your own yard. Beyond that, the debate between omnivore/vegans/vegetarian is mental masturbation.

On a logical level, I can't say I disagree with this. Antibiotics are a marvel, but we are in an arms race with these bacteria - one that, eventually, we will lose. The less we use them, the better. Unfortunately, as other posters have pointed out, we live in a world where our population requires food on a scale that almost necessitates these intensive, ABX-infused agriculture methods. Either we make the painful choice to change the way we eat (less meat, and more expensive) or we will be in for a world of hurt sooner or later.

whoever claims he does something for "greater good" is just a hypocrite... you only try to make yourself more important than you really are... if you don't like meat, fine, don't eat meat... kill plants instead... but don't say it's for the environment because it has its downsides too when applied on a global scale (no veggie talks about them, of course)... don't say its because of some disease because you can get it from unclean vegetables as well... don't even say it's because you feel sorry for four legged parasites because you shouldn't care... just eat your vegetables and shut the #$%$ up... I don't go around telling people to eat meat - if they don't, fine, more for me

Wish there were more like her; have you noticed the price of beef lately..... If more people eat grass and leaves; I can afford more steak......... The Chinese are buying up beef like crazy.....

What I find ironic is that the same people who advocate the legalization of drugs and abortion (on the grounds that "What I do with my body is my business") are the same people who try to force others to eat vegetarian. I'm fairly libertarian. You want to be vegan? Fine with me, I won't bother your or criticize you for your choice. Don't whine when I eat a steak though-unless you want an earful back.

Yes, instead eat e-coli infected spinach, or how about some deadly listeria contaminated cantalope? You can get mrsa from contact with an infected person or contaminated objects, you won't acquire it from eating cooked meat.

I have friends who are vegetarian and friends who do paleo (a HUGE pro-meat diet. I'm not sure how you would ever do paleo without meat and still be healthy). I've never had any of my vegetarian pals foist their opinions on me; however, I my paleo pals won't shut up about me doing paleo too. I find them highly annoying and I am sick of and tired of them trying to get me to eat their dishes at parties or referring to carbs as "poison" as I'm eating a cookie. Regardless of who you are, the diet you ascribe to, or your personal philosophy of what is "best", it is annoying when you try to tell someone to "GO" anything. Juniper is not the average vegetarian. Most are quiet about it.

COOK your food and you won't have to worry.... THESE are the things you have to worry about when you don't eat WELL DONE meats..

To everyone saying that we should just stop supporting factory farms, without going vegetarian: there is no way to produce the amount America eats without factory farming. And very, very few people are actually willing to pay triple the cost for organic meat.

The REALITY is that a taste for meat, and the immediate increase in mental and physical stamina that comes with a good supercharging of animal protein, is what caused mankind to develop intelligence.

After all, it takes ZERO brainpower to sneak up on a plant.

HERD ANIMALS eat plants, not top-of-the-food-chain humans with the intelligence of the self-aware, self-sufficient individual.

Now, WHO wants us to return to the dim-brained days of the vegetation-based diet? WHO wants us to become herd animals?

      And, more importantly, WHY?

No matter what some may think, there IS an agenda at work in this issue; and ignoring that agenda has led to the crappy economy, and anti-individual country we have today.

So, thanks, but I'll take my chances and STAY SMART, instead of becoming just another tofu-farting liberal herd animal.
