Before the medal, a beer for Obama and Marine

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has shared a beer with Dakota Meyer at the White House the evening before presenting the former Marine with the Medal of Honor.

The White House revealed the private moment shared by the two men Wednesday evening on the patio outside of the Oval Office. A White House ceremony to bestow the medal to Meyer is set for Thursday.

Meyer saved 36 lives during an ambush in September of 2009 by insurgents in Afghanistan. He is credited with saving 13 Marines and Army soldiers, along with 23 Afghan soldiers. The military says Meyer personally killed at least eight insurgents despite being wounded himself.

So glad to hear our President honoring this brave Marine with the medal of Honor and a glass of beer in the white house. That;ll be one great story to tell his grandkids someday. My hat is off to you Dakota Myers! 3 cheers for the Marine Corp!

Love or hate Obama,He is our Commander in Chief. In order to be respected you need to show respect. All of Obamas political problems set aside he showed this war hero due respect. We as Americans should appreciate that fact, not turn Sgt Meyers special honor into a negative event for him
      • Mitch22 8 mths ago
It should have been awarded by somebody that served... like his 1SG

Hate him! when has obama EVER shown respect to the american citizens? NEVER! Thats exactly why no one has respect for the muslim! Get a clue man!

What a great photo op for Obama - at the expense of a hero.

It's totally cool that Obama had a beer with the guy. I love it. The medal is great (and well deserved), but to spend some time with the president and have a beer and shoot the #$%$ How cool. How many people get to do that? And, before you do the Obama bashing, ask yourself if you wouldn't enjoy having a beer with the president of the US? I'm not a George Bush fan, but I would enjoy getting to hang out with him and just #$%$ a bit.

Maybe if he was actually qualified to be President
      • Mark 8 mths ago
yeah but would he answer my questions truthfully?-i doubt it -but you are right about the fact that as much as i dislike the man-it would be something i wouldn't turn down

Mitch22, why don't you run for President. Oh, I'm sorry you're a bigger #$%$ than Obama is.

Hey Mr. Claton: It sound like you need some help with that bitterness that you have. Those are some very mean comments that you have left. I SERIOUSLY doubt that would do such a thing to President Obama in real life. It sure is safe to hide behind that computer of yours. Well let me hide behind mine for a second, and tell you in brit style to '#$%$ off'!
    • pvtoldschool  •  8 mths ago
no wonder no one wants to fight and die for this country ,, most of you and your comments are pure #$%$ !!!!!!
      • PittSki 8 mths ago
No one in Afghanistan is dying for this country. They are dying for each other, International Corporations and the Military Industrial Complex. Don't worry though, I leave for my 4th deployment in February timeframe. These wars have NOTHING to do with freedom or national defense.
      • pvtoldschool 8 mths ago
If they or you for that fact are doing it while in a US military uniform ,,%$#@$ you did it for the country, now whether you respect that or not,,thats a different story

If not in all wars, then almost all, the alleged reasons for them are soon forgotten by most soldiers on all sides, and they fight for each other and for their hopeful mutual survival. I can't know with a reasonable degree of certainty the level of collusion among the International Corporations and the Military Industrial Complex in our current wars. We invaded Iraq not to get Iraqi oil per se for ourselves alone, but it was about oil. What profits the corporations got out of it was just "icing on the cake." Afghanistan is an unfathomable jumble of conflicting and self-conflicting interests. It is a "no-win" situation, of course. If we stay, we and many of the Afghans lose. When we leave, we and most Afghans will lose. Our leaders are trapped in a cold-eyed, cold-hearted geopolitical game strategy that they can never admit to us or maybe even to themselves--that is, the depth of it. No outsiders can know the bitter reality of it than those who fight it. Well, good luck from an old man, PiitSki.

Way to go Dakota! Congrats on a job extremely well done - kudos to President Obama as well. Any president who will sit down and have a cold one with a war hero is the president for me.

I can see it doesn't take much of a person to please you! I have higher standards for my president...and it's one thats not a marxist illegal muslim! that was the reason I didn't vote for obama!

Wow, you need to raise the bar. A lot. Wonder how many beers Obama had with Bill Ayers, the terrorist?

A cursory review of many comments below leads one to surmise that rarely, if not never, in the field of human conflict, has so much been owed by so many so ungrateful and nauseatingly mean-spirited, flip individuals to so few. What a depressing, debased and depraved society and polity to which this nation has descended. A Theory of Devolution would seem more appropriate than its opposite.

The day american's go back to what the founding fathers of america founded the country on then they will grow. You can insult the president as much as you like but he his still your president and would remain until god's says he would leave. Get over it people and have a life. Most of you who insult him are low lifes who because you do not have free tax payers money to live on are frustrated. May god bless this hero and others like him.

Its a shame how a man skin color has and will continue to effect some people. We have not accepted the facts, that President is not white enough for white America..He receives these daily beating, just like our fore fathers received theirs. Reminds me of when Hilary Clinton was running for the democratic nomination for president. She wanted to show that she was just a regular gal drinking a boiler maker (shot and a beer)
with a steel maker (one of very few left in this country) while campaigning in Ohio. Having a common drink with a commoner is an election year tactic. Time to wake up and vote these bums out of office. They couldn't care less about anybody but themselves and everything else is a show.
    • kathleen  •  8 mths ago
Obama shouldn't be seen in the same State with this guy much less the same room. These Politicians are always giving someone else a medal since their to chicken #$%$ to go into the military themselves.
    • PittSki  •  8 mths ago
I amsure that Devil Dog just wanted to get his MoH and get away from Obama and his publicity stunt ASAP. Yut, Semper Fidelis.
    • Amos  •  8 mths ago
I would think that being President the job would be 24/7. Since when is drinking on the job acceptable?
    • Steve G  •  8 mths ago
